The Mariners traded catcher Rob Johnson to the San Diego Padres Tuesday for a player to be named later, or cash considerations. The Mariners made the move in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for DH Jack Cust.
The Mariners designated Johnson for assignment on Dec. 13, shortly after they acquired Miguel Olivo.
Johnson began the 2010 season as Seattle’s starting catcher, but was sent to AAA Tacoma in early August. He took with him a .191 batting average and an American League-high nine passed balls.
Johnson underwent three off-season surgeries before the 2010 season: repaired torn labrums on his right (10/15/09) and left hip (11/3/09), and had surgery on his left wrist (11/17/09).
Selected by the Mariners in the fourth round of the 2004 amateur draft, Johnson hit .200 (94×470) with 48 runs, 29 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs and 42 RBI in 161 games in parts of four seasons with the club.

Having healed from his injuries, and having been traded away from the misery at Safeco, Johnson will now hit .324 with 40 homers. Oh, and not have a passed ball all season.
Rob Johnson won’t be missed by me.
Hopefully our catcher won’t be so bad this year.
