Washington coach Steve Sarkisian introduced the Huskies’ 23-man 2011 recruiting class on National Signing Day. Ten offensive players and 13 defensive players make up the class. Washington could still reach the maximum of 25 scholarships in this class.
This being a different type of sports site, we offer a different rundown of football commits. We’ve listed them by how many stars they earned (according to the indispensable Scout.com). For the bigger recruits, we have video, a little bit about their background, where they fit, and what Sarkisian had to say about them. And at the bottom of the post, we’ve broken down the list down by star rating, position, and region.
Five-star recruits
Kasen Williams, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, #2 WR
Puget Sound — Skyline (Sammamish)
Icebreaker: “You gonna outplay your Dad?” Williams’ father, Aaron, ran track and played WR for the Huskies from 1979-82, scoring 13 TDs in three seasons. Here’s Papa Williams in the ’82 media guide.
Sarkisian’s take: “To have this player come to the University of Washington is obviously very exciting. Hes a tremendous athlete. He can run, he can jump, hes physical. Extremely competitive. I think he can have an immediate impact.”
Austin Seferian-Jenkins, 6-6, 250 #2 TE
Puget Sound — Gig Harbor
Icebreaker: “Bach or Beethoven?” Saferian-Jenkins’ grandfather, Edward Saferian, was conductor of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra for 35 years.
Sarkisian’s take: “An extreme talent. Hes a freakish talent. Hes a fantastic athlete. I had a chance the other night to watch him play basketball. Amazing feet. Amazing hand-eye coordination. They just dont make guys like this all the time. The transition into the complete tight end position, will be a challenge.”
Four-star recruits
Bishop Sankey, 5-10, 194, #17 RB
Eastern WA — Gonzaga Prep (Spokane)
Icebreaker: “Burn all your crimson yet?” Sankey originally said he was going to Washington State, then changed his mind and committed to the Huskies. CougFan had to talk Wazzu fans off the ledge.
Sarkisian’s take: “Had a fantastic career, a really delightful young man. Hes been very upfront and honest with us. Hes got a lot of versatility to his game. He ran inside, he ran outside. Used as a Wildcat quarterback.”
Three-star recruits
Derrick Brown, 6-3, 239, #46 QB
SoCal — Vista Murrieta (Murrieta)
Icebreaker: “But do you have a direct line to Jesus?” Brown says he models his game and his life after Tim Tebow. Like Tebow, Brown is big and likes contact.
Sarkisian’s take: “Really unique kid. The process with him was one I think we all wish could have happened a little sooner. Hes a bigger kid. Tremendous arm strength. Good athlete. Possesses a lot of the intangibles. Hes a tremendous punter, as well.”
Siosifa Tufunga, 6-1, 297, #83 OG
SoCal — Jordan (Long Beach)
Icebreaker: “Ever find any old pipes in your lockers?” Tufunga shares an alma mater with Calvin Broadus, a.k.a. Snoop Dogg. Jordan High’s other notable alumnus: Former Mariner announcer Ron Fairly.
Sarkisian’s take: “Hasnt played a whole lot of football. Extremely athletic, hes going to be an inside guy for us whether hes going to be a guard or center. I think his best football is definitely ahead of him.”
Dexter Charles, 6-5, 280, #102 OT
Puget Sound — Stanwood
Icebreakers: “Got any good dirt on Sark?” Charles’ head coach at Stanwood played in the same BYU backfield as Steve Sarkisian
Sarkisian’s take: “Big, physical kid who we had earmarked early on. Athletic for his size.”
Josh Perkins, 6-4, 198, #111 WR
SoCal — Gahr (Cerritos)
Sarkisian’s take: “All of 6-4, 200 pounds, tremendous leaping ability, long arms. A little different nature. If youre not going to be a speed demon, get long.”
Jamaal Jones, 6-2, 180, #121 WR
Puget Sound — Graham-Kapowsin (Graham)
Sarkisian’s take: “In-state kid who unfortunately wasnt able to play his senior year because of a shoulder injury. Long, basketball-player type.”
Marvin Hall, 5-10, 168, #17 WR
SoCal — Dorsey (Los Angeles)
Sarkisian’s take: “Real speedster. Guy that will probably run 10.4 in the 100 meters this year. Comes from a storied program.”
Two-star recruits
Dezden Petty, 6-0, 213, #11 FB
SoCal — Gardena (Los Angeles)
Sarkisian’s take: “Is a fullback/running back. Also brings a physical nature to his game. Reminiscent to me of (former USC back) Stanley Havili. Thats what well be looking for Dezden to do.”

Love to see a RB run tough up the middle, and also be able to pull away from dbs like that, even if they are just kids.
