The Mariners made an effort to rally from a big deficit, but the six runs allowed by starter Erik Bedard Sunday were too much and Seattle took a 6-4 loss at the hands of the Cleveland Indians that has Seattle at 2-7 through their first nine games.
Held to two hits and one run on a sacrifice fly by Justin Smoak through six innings, the Mariners finally knocked Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin around in the seventh. A walk to Jack Cust and a Ryan Langerhans homer with one out did most of the damage, and with two out, Cleveland manager Manny Acta asked right-hander Chad Durbin to pitch.
Michael Saunders then stretched his streak of games with an RBI to five with a solo homer to left that cut the deficit to 6-4.
When Chis Gimenez followed with a single, the Mariners brought the tying run to the plate in the person of Ichiro Suzuki, forcing Acta to go to his bullpen for a lefty, Rafael Perez. Ichrio hit him hard, but his sinking liner to center was plucked by Indians’ center fielder Michael Brantley, and Seattle would not threaten again.
Bedard was out of synch from the start. In his second time out after missing all of last year thanks to shoulder surgery, the lefty gave up at least one run in each of his four innings, including a first-inning homer by former Mariner Asdrubal Cabrera and a fourth-inning blast by another former Mariner, Jack Hannahan.

I was at the game today. Bedard does not have “real-game,” as opposed to spring training game, confidence right now. I am going tomorrow night too. Why I am not sure. But then again I also like being whipped.
