The marquee game between Rainier Beach High School and Garfield High School wrapped a long day of high school hoops at the King Holiday Hoopfest on Monday. Garfield won 63-58.

Washington verbal commits Tony Wroten Jr. (29 points) of Garfield and Hikeem Stewart (14 points) of Rainier Beach were the shine used for sales.

But this was more a day about community wrapped in basketball. A stirring spoken word was delivered to open a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which preceded the final game. A pastor delivered inspirational words. Two young women spoke about stereotypes.

Local basketball cognoscenti was present. Washington State head coach Ken Bone hobnobbed with old boss Lorenzo Romar. Seattle University head coach Cameron Dollar, also a product of the Romar coaching tree, sat courtside with his assistants.

Agents, want-to-be agents and overzealous adults were strewn throughout, and the video board reminded of the alumni from prior hoopfest gatherings: Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson, Terrence Williams, Aaron Brooks, et al.

Noel Zanchelli captured the end of the event for Sportspress Northwest.

  1. But the second-biggest development is the opportunity to second-guess the coach on his choice of quarterback. Whitehurst completed 11 of 19 passes for 149 yards. THIS WAS LESS THAN TWO QUARTERS

Jackson was 15 of 22 for 166 yards.THIS TOOK 3/4s OF THE GAME WOW!!!

  2. I liked the better production from Jackson Sunday. It seems he’s still “thinking” and it seems he has trouble getting into rhythm. Whitehurst did a good job, especially off the bench and seems to have the rhythm and the ability to run the team better than Jackson in the no-huddle.

Overall they both did well (Especially considering how the line SUCKS), and Whitehurst, to me, seemed more polished and sure in the position.

It’s just a shame there were the 2 red zone fumbles in the first half (INEXCUSABLE) which would have made it a completely diffferent game.

PS: The line, as bad as it is, had definitely shown improvement since the first game. Hopefully they continue to improve.
