Washington and Washington State have played 104 times since 1900, when the teams first met in Seattle. The Huskies have a huge lead in the series with 67 victories, and take a three-game winning streak into the 105th edition of the Apple Cup on Friday at Martin Stadium in Pullman. 1907 Seattle WSU 11-5 The “Gigantic Aggies from Washington State College (Post-Intelligencer)” overwhelm injury-riddled UW; Purple and Gold fire coach Victor Place after season.
1908 Seattle 6-6 tie WSU’s Joe Halm and UW’s Maxwell Eakins each boot FGs (4 points), but Eakins misses 3 and a late safety accounts for only blemish on UW’s record (6-0-1).
1910 Seattle UW 16-0 UW’s Wee Coyle tosses a 14-yard TD to Pete Husby, Will Cahill intercepts a WSU pass, races 65 yards to TD; Purple and Gold outscore foes on season 150-8.
1911 Spokane UW 30-6 UW’s Mel Mucklestone runs for two short touchdowns and Wee Coyle sprints 45 yards for another as the Purple and Gold finish 7-0-0, outscoring foes 286-9.
1912 Seattle UW 19-0 Washington completes its fourth consecutive perfect season (6-0-0) under head coach Gil Dobie in front of a crowd of 7,000, largest ever to see game in the NW.
1913 Seattle UW 20-0 Walt Shiel and Hap Miller each run 2 yards for touchdowns as the Purple and Gold complete fifth straight perfect year (7-0-0), outscoring foes 266-20.
1914 Seattle UW 45-0 Elmer Noble and Walt Shiel score touchdowns as the Purple and Gold post another unbeaten record (6-0-1); UW outscores opponents by a whopping 242-13.
1917 Seattle WSU 14-0 WSU’s “Bing” Bangs bangs for 80 yards; Fred Glover and Bob Doane both score touchdowns as Lone Star Dietz’s crew finishes the campaign with a 6-0-1 mark.
1919 Pullman UW 13-7 Ervin Dailey scores the winning TD as Washington claims a share of the Pacific Coast Conference title; WSU students officially adopt “Cougars” as nickname.
1921 Seattle WSU 14-0 Mike Moran scores on a pair of 5-yard touchdown runs seven minutes apart as Washington State hands the Purple and Gold its second shutout in three years.
1922 Pullman UW 16-13 UW finishes 6-1-1, the best record since Gil Dobie departed in 1916; UW students and faculty officially adopt nickname “Huskies” for school athletic teams.
1923 Seattle UW 24-7 Sophomore halfback George Wilson rushes for 80 yards and Elmer “The Chehalis Bearcat” Tesreau scores 2 touchdowns in Washington’s easy victory.

1925 Pullman UW 23-0 Walter Camp All-American George Wilson hurls a 40-yard TD to “speedy end” Jud Cutting, then returns interception school-record 90 yards for a touchdown.
1926 Seattle WSU 9-6 Sans headgear, Washington State’s Butch Meeker runs for a TD, boots a FG; Meeker is briefly KO’d in a head-on collision; UW’s Gene Cooke kicks 22, 39 FGs.
1927 Seattle UW 14-0 Washington’s Chuck Carroll rushes for 136 yards, scores 2 TDs; teammate Louie Tesreau adds 102 yards; first pair of UW backs to rush for 100 yards each.
1928 Seattle UW 6-0 Walter Camp All-America Chuck Carroll hurls a 19-yard touchdown pass to Eilert “Buzz” Meader late in third quarter to win the game.
1929 Pullman WSU 20-13 After Washington’s Merle Hufford tosses 2 touchdowns to end John Geehan, Washington State’s Elmer Schwartz scores 3 TDs to give the Cougars the win.
1930 Seattle WSU 3-0 Washington State recovers a Merle Hufford fumble on opening kickoff, setting up Lyle Maskell’s game-winning 41-yard FG; Mel Hein stars for WSU’s defense.
1931 Seattle UW 12-0 Washington RBs Rebel Bledsoe and Merle Hufford score touchdowns on short runs as the Huskies snap a 2-game losing streak to the Cougars.
1932 Seattle 0-0 tie Washington twice repels Washington State inside the 10-yard line in the second half to preserve a tie in a rainy, muddy game at Husky Stadium.
1933 Pullman WSU 17-6 With score tied at 6, Washington’s Bill Smith fumbles at midfield; Washington State’s Charley McBride scoops up “errant spheroid (P-I),” runs for winning TD.
1934 Seattle 0-0 Tie UW’s Socko “Sixty Minute” Sulkosy, aka “The Puyallup Plunger” rushes for 62 yards but can’t score as Washington and WSU play to second 0-0 tie in three years.
1935 Pullman UW 21-0 Byron Haines runs 70 yards for a touchdown — longest so far in rivalry history — on first play from scrimmage as UW wins in Pullman for first time in 10 years.
1936 Seattle UW 40-0 With Rose Bowl berth on line for both teams — first time ever — Jimmy Phelan’s Huskies crush Cougars to finish 7-1-1; UW’s Steve Slivinski “blocks like madman.”
1937 Pullman 7-7 tie Carl Littlefield scores an early touchdown for Cougars, but QB Fritz Waskowitz throws an 80-yard touchdown pass to Merle Miller late in 4th to tie.
1938 Seattle UW 26-0 Dean McAdams runs for a touchdown, throws for a TD, and then Jimmy Johnston scores on 55-yard dash as Washington handles the Cougars easily.
1939 Pullman WSU 6-0 After the Huskies misplay a punt on their own 5-yard line, Washington State converts the turnover into a game-winning touchdown run by Rex Bantz.
1940 Seattle UW 33-9 UW scores on 56-yard Dean McAdams-to-Earl Younglove TD pass, a 35-yard INT by Rudy Mucha, and an 83-yard PR by Ernie Steele, all in the fourth quarter.
1941 Pullman UW 23-13 UW’s “Battering” Bob Barrett rushes for 135 yards and scores a touchdown as WSU coach Babe Hollingbery yanks off his hat on sideline and stomps it into ground.
1942 Seattle 0-0 tie Washington State’s Nick Susoeft drops a sure touchdown pass in the end zone, wrecking the Cougars’ hopes of going to Rose Bowl for first time in 11 years.
1945 Seattle UW 6-0 Washington scores a TD early but misses extra point; Cougars then “Coug” it, by having a 73-yard TD run in fourth quarter called back on holding penalty.
1945 Seattle WSU 7-0 After not playing football in 1943-44 due to WWII, Cougars return to post 6-2-1 mark under new coach Phil Sarboe (only year when teams played twice).
1946 Pullman UW 21-7 Trailing 7-0 after the first quarter, Washington gets touchdowns from Larry Hatch, Fred Provo and Whitey King to spoil the Cougars’ homecoming party.
1947 Seattle UW 20-0 QB Dick Ottele, FB Marshall Dallas and HB Fred Provo score on short touchdown runs as the Huskies close out a lackluster 3-6-0 campaign.
1948 Pullman WSU 10-0 QB Stan Mataya throws a 2-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Cross; Bill Lippincott adds a field goal as Cougars notch first shutout over UW since 1939.
1949 Seattle UW 34-21 Newcomer Hugh McElhenny rushes for 147 yards and romps 48 yards for a TD and Roland Kirkby adds 140 yards, including a 35-yard TD, to pace the UW.
1950 Spokane UW 52-21 Junior sensation McElhenny sets still-standing Washington record with 296 rushing yards and scores 5 touchdowns on runs of 23, 39, 7, 14 and 83 yards.
1951 Seattle WSU 27-25 Washington State’s Bob Burkhart throws 3 TD passes to beat the Huskies; McElhenny ends UW career by rushing for 135 rushing yards and a TD.
1952 Spokane UW 33-27 Washington’s Don Heinrich tops the nation’s passers with 137 completions; WSU’s Ed Barker catches a school-record 10 balls and scores a touchdown.
1953 Seattle WSU 25-20 WSU’s Tom Gunarri blocks a Corky Bridges punt at the 4-yard line, setting up Chuck Beckel’s game-winning touchdown as Cougars complete 4-6-0 season.
1954 Pullman WSU 26-7 Frank Sarno’s 47-yard TD pass to Jim Hagerty sparks the Cougars to their second straight win over the Huskies and the most lopsided in history of rivalry.
1955 Seattle UW 27-7 An historic day for Washington’s Credell Green, who runs for 258 yards (then second only to McElhenny’s 296), scores on 50-yard run and intercepts a pass.
1956 Spokane UW 40-26 Mike McCluskey runs for 133 yards and 58-yard TD as Washington rushes for 368 yards to minus-2 yards for WSU; Huskies avoid losing year (5-5-0).
1957 Seattle WSU 27-7 Bob Newman tosses two TD passes to lead the Cougars while UW implodes with 5 fumbles in first 30 minutes; new UW coach Jim Owens goes 3-6-1.
1958 Pullman WSU 18-14 Dave Wilson tosses an early touchdown to Don Ellersick, then wins the game with late TD, again to Ellersick, as WSU captures its second straight from UW.
1959 Seattle UW 20-0 UW’s Bob Schloredt stars, rushing for 111 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 72 yards as Washington clinches its first trip to the Rose Bowl since 1944.
1960 Spokane UW 8-7 After Washington scores late to trail 7-6, Husky coach Jim Owens elects to go for two; a Bob Hivner-to-Don McKeta pass play clinches the victory.
1961 Seattle UW 21-17 Washington’s Charlie Mitchell races 23 yards around right end for a touchdown with 1:35 left in the fourth to win the game for Huskies, who finish 5-4-1.
1962 Spokane UW 26-21 Washington gets a FG and a safety in the final minute to claim the first official Apple Cup Trophy; WSU’s Hugh Campbell posts a school-record 178 receiving yards.
1963 Seattle UW 16-0 Junior Coffey scores 2 touchdowns, and Chuck Bond nabs WSU QB Dave Mathieson in the end zone for safety as UW earns third Rose Bowl trip under Owens.
1964 Spokane UW 14-0 Washington’s triumph gives Jim Owens a school-record six straight conquests of Washington State, breaking a mark he shared with legendary Gil Dobie.
1965 Seattle UW 27-9 UW’s Don Moore rushes for 107 yards, Ron Medved adds 101 and 38-yard touchdown and QB Tod Hullin fires 54-yard scoring pass to flanker Dave Williams.
1966 Spokane UW 19-7 Washington kicker Don Martin boots a school-record four field goals, of 30, 36, 25 and 37 yards, as UW tramples the Cougars for the eighth straight time.
1967 Seattle WSU 9-7 WSU’s Mike Cadigan, a defensive back most of season, tosses a 10-yard touchdown pass to Larry Thatcher to seal Cougar win, their first over UW since 1958.
1968 Spokane WSU 24-0 WSU’s Hank Grenda scores a TD, passes for 2 others, kicks 3 PATs and boots a field goal as WSU records its first shutout in series since 1948.
1969 Seattle UW 30-21 UW QB Gene Willis throws for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns to Ralph Bayard as the Huskies (1-9-0) avoid their first winless season since 1890.
1970 Spokane UW 43-25 UW sophomore quarterback Sonny Sixkiller hurls two TD passes, runs for another TD; Bill Cahill’s touchdown on an interception return sparks UW.
1971 Seattle UW 28-20 Washington’s Pete Taggares runs for 119 yards and a TD and Sonny Sixkiller scores a TD; Husky defense holds WSU running back Bernard Jackson to 11 yards.
1972 Spokane WSU 27-10 Ty Paine scores 2 TDs as the Cougars end Sonny Sixkiller’s remarkable career by sacking the UW quarterback 7 times; Eric Johnson has 3 INTs for WSU.
1973 Seattle WSU 52-26 WSU’s Andrew Jones romps for 139 yards and scores on TDs of 12, 1 and 62 yards, offsetting Chris Rowland’s record day of 354 yards, 3 TD passes.
1974 Spokane UW 24-17 UW quarterback Denny Fitzpatrick rushes for still-standing Husky QB-record 249 yards on 36 carries; Robin Earl runs for 2 TDs as UW finishes 7-4-0.
1975 Seattle UW 28-27 Huskies erase a 27-14 deficit with 3:01 left and win on a Warren Moon-to-Spider Gaines 78-yard touchdown pass and Al Burleson’s 93-yard interception return.

1979 Seattle UW 17-7 Vince Coby rushes for 112 yards and scores a TD and linebacker Jim Pence makes 16 tackles to pace the Huskies to their sixth straight win over WSU.
1980 Spokane UW 30-23 WSU quarterback Samoa Samoa turns on the Spokane crowd with TD runs of 33 and 5 yards, but UW’s Tom Flick has career day with 311 yards and 3 TDs.
1981 Seattle UW 23-10 With both UW and WSU playing for a berth in the Rose Bowl, Ron Jackson (103 yards, TD) and Jacque Robinson (93 yards) steal the show for Huskies.
1982 Pullman WSU 24-20 After UW’s Chuck Nelson shockingly misses his first FG attempt of the season, Coug fans tear down the goal posts at Martin Stadium, toss them in Palouse River.

1985 Seattle WSU 21-20 Washington State’s Rueben Mayes pounds for 167 yards as the Cougars win coldest-ever Apple Cup game (20 degrees at kickoff) at Husky Stadium.
1986 Pullman UW 44-23 Vince Weathersby rushes for career-high 177 yards and Chris Chandler tosses 3 TDs to flanker Brian Slater as the Huskies earn a trip to the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

2002 Pullman UW 29-26 After missing 3 field goal tries, UW PK John Anderson nails 5 in a row, including 3 in OT, to give Huskies first-ever triple overtime victory over Cougars.
2003 Seattle UW 27-19 Cody Pickett tosses a 21-yard TD to freshman Corey Williamson with 1:10 to play, lifting UW. Marquis Cooper then scores on 38-yard INT to seal win.
2004 Pullman WSU 28-25 Quarterback Alex Brink throws two touchdown passes and runs for another as the Cougars defeat the Huskies for the first time since 1997.
2005 Seattle WSU 26-22 Jerome Harrison rushes for 207 yards and a TD, and Alex Brink throws for 283 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Cougars take second straight.
2006 Pullman UW 35-32 Louis Rankin rushes for 118 yards and two TDs, including a game-breaking 77-yard romp, as the Huskies snap a two-game losing streak to Cougars.
2007 Seattle WSU 42-35 Alex Brink throws for 399 yards and five TDs and becomes the first WSU quarterback to beat the Huskies three times as the Cougars win the 100th Apple Cup.
2008 Pullman WSU 16-13 Nico Grasu’s 37-yard FG in the second overtime gives WSU the victory and its second straight win. Willie Griffin rushes for 116 yards for Washington.
2009 Seattle UW 30-0 Jake Locker throws for 196 yards and a TD, runs for 94 and a TD, and Chris Polk rushes for 130 yards as UW posts its first Apple Cup shutout in 45 years.
2010 Pullman UW 35-28 Chris Polk rushes for 284 yards — second-highest total in an Apple Cup — and a pair of TDs, leading UW. Winning score: Jake Locker tosses a 27-yard TD to Jermaine Kearse with 44 seconds left.
2011 Seattle UW 38-21 Keith Price passes or 291 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Kasen Williams as UW wins for the third straight year. Mike Lobbestael throws for 344 yards for WSU.

  1. The bottom line issue is coaching or the lack thereof.  Yes, a young and relatively inexperienced roster including an injured/marginal quarterback are issues, but the lack of discipline, the repeated mistakes made game after game all point to a bigger problem.
