Washington point guard Isaiah Thomas will put his name into consideration for the NBA draft but will not hire an agent, leaving open the chance for him to return to Washington for his senior season officially. But he clarified he will not be coming back to the school.
Although it was a tough decision, I have decided to forego my senior season and enter my name into this years NBA draft,” Thomas said in a statement. “At this time I will not hire an agent. Over the past three years I’ve enjoyed every single minute of my Washington Husky career. I am very thankful to have played for a great coach like Coach Romar and our entire coaching staff.
“I have just over two quarters left to earn my degree, and I fully plan on finishing school. Also, I would like to take the time to thank all of my teammates and Husky fans for their support and the unforgettable memories. Go Dawgs!
Washington coach Lorenzo Romar, who said all along he would support Thomas in exploring his draft options, also issued a statement on the topic.
Isaiah Thomas has had an unbelievable impact on our program during his time with us. We will definitely miss him, but we are behind him in his quest to fulfill a lifelong dream to play in the NBA.
It’s a surprise to hear Thomas choose this path considering his draft options appear limited and an NBA lockout is likely next season. He gave varying answers about his future directly after Washington’s loss to North Carolina in Charlotte in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Thomas led Washington with 16.8 points per game this season. The junior was moving up three all-time lists at Washington: points, assists, and three-point makes.
