Scott Suggs, a senior co-captain on the University of Washington basketball team, will not return to the Huskies this season. Suggs underwent surgery on Oct. 14 to repair a fracture in his toe, has missed Washington’s first seven games, and plans to apply for a medical redshirt and return to the team next season.
At the time Suggs underwent surgery, it was believed he would miss between 8-12 weeks, the goal being to have him back in time to play in Madison Square Garden this week against Marquette and Duke in the Jimmy V and CARQUEST Auto Parts Classic, respectively.
The Huskies take on the No. 7 Blue Devils Saturday at 9 a.m.
In a statement released by the UW athletic department, Suggs said, “I felt like with the rehab process it might go a little quicker. My original goal was to play this week in New York. As it got closer it felt like this was the best decision.
“Being back out there practicing and my rhythm being off a little, I just wanted to be able to play a full year my last season. Another year to get better and being able to play a full season — just trying to get the most out of my last year.”
Suggs, 6-foot-6, was Washington’s third-leading returning scorer. He made 45 percent of his 3-point attempts last season when he averaged 7.4 points per game.
“He would love to help our team,” coach Lorenzo Romar said in a statement. “He’d love to come back. It’s hard for him to sit out and watch his teammates, but this being his senior year he felt he didn’t want to play a half or 3/4 of the season in his last go-around at Washington.
“He wanted to contribute for the entire year. In the big picture for Scott Suggs and in the long run it’s a great decision on his part.”
Following their game in New York Saturday against Duke, the Huskies will return to Alaska Airlines Arena Dec. 16 to take on UC Santa Barbara.
