Football fashionistas, or gridiron trick-or-treat?

The Seahawks and the rest of the NFL teams showed off new styles Tuesday in a New York fashion show by Nike, creators of the new apparel line for all teams, previously done by Reebok.

Nike, of Beaverton, OR., has been the designer of the Oregon Ducks sometimes-controversial outfits, and seemed to unleash Tuesday some of the same fashion sense upon the Seahawks, who were the only team to receive a total makeover.

Down the sides of the pants are feathers — a dozen on each leg, a salute to the 12th Man. Feathers also adorn the jersey numbers and the helmet. The colors are new, with names likely found in paint stores — college navy, action green and wolf grey. The road uniforms are gray, home are white and there’s an alternative blue.

The idea is to incorporate colors of the Northwest, so green, gray and blue do that pretty well, especially after 10 years of the blue-silver blend that never seemed to be a color found in nature.

As to the mix, well, it will be a matter of opinion — Nike loves.

The new Seattle look was a big hit with Buffalo Bills strong safety George Wilson.

“Why do the Seahawks get the cool uniforms?” he told reporters at the New York show. “I like changing it up and not doing the expected. Seattle is really taking some risks in their uniform. But from hearing the other guys talk about it in the back, I think their uniform was the overwhelming player favorite in the dressing room.”

The more prosaic gear stuff includes lighter, stronger, rain-repellent jerseys; better fitting pants that supposedly provide better protection, and high-tech socks that protect the feet and ankles.

Running back LeGarrette Blount, a former Duck now with Tampa Bay Buccaneers, seemed a bit resentful after seeing the Seahawks’ uniform.

“Look at the Seahawks, they got the whole new uniform,” Blount said. “I’m kind of mad. I’m upset. I like that look. That’s sweet.”

Safety Cam Chancellor was the Seahawks model and first up on stage.

“I first saw them when I got a chance to put the whole uniform for the video (shown Tuesday),” Chancellor said in New York. “At the end, I didn’t want to take it off. I wanted to wear it out of the locker room. It just feels like it’s me.”

  1. Yuck.  Why not just replace the bird with the swoosh on the helmet while they’re at it?

  3. They now look like children’s uniforms. The ones they’ve had were much more sinister and intimidating.
