The Seahawks pulled off a stunner Thursday, taking Bruce Irvin, a 6-3, 248-pound defensive end from West Virginia who dazzled scouts with a 4.5-second time in the 40 yard dash, then disappointed many when he was arrested for breaking a sign at a sandwich shop.

Most scouting services projected Irvin as second-rounder. He did himself no good when he was arrested in March in Morgantown, W. Va., and charged with destruction of property.

That wasn’t enough to discourage the Seahawks, who see him as a pass-rush specialist that fills their biggest positional need. He had 8.5 sacks in a senior season that was considered disappointing.

He plays the position occupied by Chris Clemons, 31, the Seashawks’ best pass rushing lineman.

The Seahawks traded their No. 12 pick to the Philadelphia Eagles, who gave the Seahawks  the No. 15 pick, plus a fourth-rounder (No. 114) and a sixth-rounder, (No. 172). The Seahawks now have two picks in the fourth round and two picks in sixth. The Seahawks fgave up their fifth-round pick in the Marshawn Lynch trade with Buffalo.

The draft continues at 4 p.m. Friday with rounds two and three. At 9 a.m. Saturday, round four begins through seven will start.

  1. At # 15?  He could have been gotten in round 2 or 3.  As a pure pass rushing freak, which was all it seems PC & General Lee really wanted, well they got him.  But they also got a head case.  But then  cop’s and courts generally count knocking down an outhouse a felony.  I’m also guilty of that 55 years ago.  I would have loved to gotten Luck’s main main Hutch the 2nd, David DeCastro, and then maybe this guy, but, oh well.

At least the sports talk jocks and writers now have a new wagon-full of ammo to last another 3 years.

  3. Interesting pick.  Pretty high for a player who was considered to be disappointing last season.  But then Aaron Curry was supposed to be a lock and that didn’t happen.  At least the Hawks won’t plan on converting him to a safety like they did with Michael Boulware.

  5. Disapointing Pick.  A project.  The Team needed an impact player now, not a part time player, not in the first round.

  7. Can’t imagine the Ms making such a daring pick.   On the contrary, some scouting director would have been fired.

    • How are those Mariners doing, by the way?  Playing it safe hasn’t produced much in the last decade.
