Quarterback Keith Price threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to WR Kasen Williams with 4:53 remaining and cornerback Desmond Trufant made a game-saving interception in the final two minutes as Washington registered an amazing 17-13 victory over No. 8-ranked Stanford Thursday night at CenturyLink Field.

The Huskies, seven-point underdogs to a team that hammered them 65-21 just one year ago in Palo Alto, improved to 3-1, doing so against the first of five consecutive nationally ranked teams on the UW schedule.

Washington didn’t do much offensively all night as Price was pressured throughout, but the Husky defense, so horrendous a year ago, held the Cardinal to just 65 rushing yards and 13 points in defeating a top-10 team for the first time in three years.

Jordan Williamson hit a 31-yard field goal at 9:12 to play in the first quarter, giving Stanford a 3-0 lead. Washington answered with a 43-yard field goal at 2:18 of the first to tie the score at 3-3. Williamson hit his second field goal just before halftime (1:10), giving Stanford a 6-3 lead at intermission.

Stanford’s Trent Murphy returned an interception 47 yards to a touchdown at 2:31 of the third quarter to give the Cardinal a 13-3 lead, but the Huskies answered with a 61-yard TD run by Bishop Sankey to end the third quarter as Washington closed within 13-10.

Price’s TD pass to Williams followed and Trufant’s heroics in intercepting a pass in a last-ditch Stanford drive ensured Washington’s victory.

The Huskies will not play again until Oct. 6 when they travel to Oregon to face the nationally ranked Oregon Ducks.

Sportspress Northwest’s Art Thiel will have a column on the Washington-Stanford game coming up shortly.

  1. We’ve come a ways I’d say. It took the same Desmond Trufant effort last year for us to beat Eastern at home!
