Running back Marshawn Lynch, who was charged with DUI Saturday in his hometown of Oakland, released a statement Friday via the Seahawks apologizing for his actions.
“I want to apologize to my family, the Seattle Seahawks, the NFL and the 12th Man for the negative attention resulting from my recent actions,” the statement said. “This is not the type of community leader I have been over the last two years or the one I’m striving to become. I want to assure everyone that I will work to be better and look forward to a very exciting, and very successful season with the Seattle Seahawks.”
Lynch is scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County court Aug. 14, where, according to his attorney, Lynch will plead not guilty.
He was stopped by California Highway Patrol officers after his Ford van was seen weaving on I-880. His blood-alcohol level was tested at least .08 at the scene, according to the police report. Ninety minutes later at the police station, he tested .10, leading his lawyer to propose that his blood alcohol may have been below .08 at the time he was driving.
The incident may be subject to review by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who in 2009 suspended Lynch for three games following a misdemeanor weapons charge. The terms of the collective bargaining agreement allow Goodell wide discretion in imposing punishment regardless of a court’s action or inaction.
