The strange basketball career of Mark McLaughlin took another turn Friday when the junior college transfer quit the University of Washington team “to pursue other interests,” a terse statement from the school said.
“Although he was only here for a short time, we enjoyed working with Mark and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” coach Lorenzo Romar said in a statement.
The 6-6, 205-pound swingman was most recently at Tacoma Community College, where last season he averaged 27.5 points and 8.1 rebounds while leading the Titans (26-5) to a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship.
But Washington was his sixth school in eight seasons, including high school, which began at Inglemoor in Bothell. He was recruited to Washington State in 2007, then spent two years at Seattle University before being recruited by Gonzaga, among others.
“It’s different because this is the school that I’ve always dreamed about playing for,” McLaughlin told the Seattle Times in April about his decision to accept a Washington scholarship. “It’s just crazy that. after everything I went through. I end up at the school I always wanted to be at.
“When I put my name on the letter I was really happy and excited about it.”
Apparently not.
There will be an empty seat on the plane when Washington departs Aug. 25 to Barcelona for a tour of Europe that wll also include a stop for games in Senegal, the home country of center Aziz N’Diaye. The trip includes two French cities in Nice and Paris.
