Hoping for a little more dynamic start to the basketball season, the Washington Huskies settled for a win, 88-78, over their little brothers from Western Washington in an exhibition contest Wednesday night at Hec Ed.
Western, the defending national champions from NCAA Division II, tied the game three times in the second half but could never gain the lead. Back-to-back steals by Jernard Jarreau and C.J. Wilcox in the final two minutes resulted in fast-break dunks that put away the game.
Wilcox led Washington with 21 points, while Andrew Andrews and Abdul Gaddy chipped in 14 and Scott Suggs, playing a game for the first time in almost a year, had 13. Aziz N’Diaye and nine points and 10rebounds.
The Vikings had 17 points each from John Allen and Chris Mitchell.
The Huskies begin regular-season games Nov. 11 against Loyola-Maryland, while Western plays Duke Saturday.
