The Mariners open a four-game set against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays Monday at Tropicana Field. / Wiki Commons

GAME: Mariners (11-12, T 2 AL West, – 5.5 GB) at Rays (14-8, T 1 AL East, 0-0 GB). GAME #: 24. SERIES: 1st of 4 games. MEETING (2012): 1st. WHEN: Monday, 4:10 p.m. Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL. PROBABLE PITCHERS: RHP Felix Hernandez (Seattle, 2-1, 2.48) vs. RHP Jeremy Hellickson (Tampa Bay, 3-0, 2.84). STREAKS: Mariners L 2; Rays W 1. TV: ROOT Sports, MLB TV. RADIO: KIRO 710 (Seattle), Mariners Radio Network.

Felix Hernandez (2-1, 2.48) would represent the Mariners’ best chance of ending a two-game losing streak if not for the fact that in his start Monday at Tropicana Field is where he is 0-2 and has a fat — for him — 5.74 career ERA.

Hernandez, who has allowed two or fewer earned runs in three of his five starts, will match throws with Jeremy Hellickson, who has yet to lose in 2012. A closer look at Monday’s starters:

MARINERS: RHP Felix Hernandez (2-1, 2.48 ERA, 1.01 WHIP)

Felix Hernandez

The 25-year-old Hernandez, in his eighth major league season, all with the Mariners, will be making his sixth start and his first against the Rays.

A native of Valencia, VZ., the 6-3, 230-pound Hernandez was signed as a non-drafted free agent July 4, 2002 by Seattle scout Bob Engle.

He made his major league debut Aug. 4, 2005, absorbing a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, in a game in which Hernandez allowed one earned run and fanned four. Hernandez is a two-time American League All-Star (2009, 2011) and won the AL Cy Young award in 2010, when he went 13-12 with a 2.27 ERA.

Hernandez has a career mark of 87-68, 3.22 ERA, and a career batting average against of .239.

  • LAST START: April 25 at Detroit, defeated the Tigers 9-1 in a game in which Dustin Ackley and Ichiro each had three hits and Alex Liddi banged a home run; allowed one earned run on four hits over 7.0 innings; had two strikeouts and uncharacteristically had three walks in the first inning, but escaped without damage.
  • LAST VS. RAYS: Aug. 19 at Tropicana Field, lost a 3-2 decision to Juan Cruz and the Rays, falling to 11-11; allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 8.0 innings, striking out nine and walking three; threw 109 pitches, 72 for strikes.
  • CAREER VS. RAYS: 3-2 record with a 2.42 ERA in nine starts covering 67.0 innings; strikes out 9.0 batters per 9 IP; has faced 269 Tampa Bay batters and yielded just four home runs; has one complete game.
  • AT TROPICANA FIELD: 0-2, 5.74 ERA in two starts, covering 15.2 IP; averages 9.0 K’s per 9 innings, but has allowed three home runs; all 10 runs allowed were earned.
  • LOVES TO FACE: Carlos Pena (0-for-11, .000 BA, 3 K’s), Brandon Allen (0-for-6, .000 BA, 5 K’s), B.J. Upton (2-for-25, .080 BA, 9 K’s), Ben Zobrist (3-for-19, .158 BA, 7 K’s).
  • HATES TO FACE: Sam Fuld (2-for-4, .500 BA), Evan Longoria (5-for-14, .357 BA).

Felix in 2012

  • March 28 (ND, 0-0): Pitched well enough to win season debut, but the Mariners and A’s battled through a 1-1 tie until the 11th when Seattle pushed across two runs to win 3-1, a Tokyo Dome contest that featured a home run and two RBIs by Dustin Ackley and a 4-for-5 performance by Ichiro.
  • April 7: (W, 1-0): Didn’t have best stuff — allowed six earned runs on eight hits over 6.1 IP — but the Mariners, banging 13 hits, 3 by Chone Figgins, staked him to a 6-0 lead.
  • April 13 (L, 1-1): Allowed two earned runs on seven hits over 7 IP, but lost to Bartolo Colon and the Oakland A’s 4-0; fanned six and walked two in a 107-pitch effort that included 69 strikes; had an equal number of ground ball and fly ball outs, 10.
  • April 19 (ND, 1-1): Gave up five hits and no runs in 8.0 innings vs. Cleveland at Safeco Field; had 12 strikeouts and one walk; Brandon League relieved and sustained both a blown save and the 2-1 loss.
  • April 25 (W, 2-1): Defeated Detroit 9-1 at Comerica Park; allowed one earned run on four hits over 7.0 innings; uncharacteristic three walks in the first inning.

RAYS: RHP Jeremy Hellickson (3-0, 2.84 ERA, 1.30 WHIP)

Jeremy Hellickson

The 25-year-old Hellickson, in his third major league season, all with Tampa, is making his fifth start and first against the Mariners.

A native of Des Moines, IA., 6-1, 190-pound Hellickson was signed by the Rays in the fourth round of the 2005 amateur draft.

He pitched in 109 minor league games in the Tampa system from 2005-10, and made his major league debut Aug. 2, 2010, earning a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins (allowed two runs on three hits over 7.0 innings).

Hellickson went 4-0, 3.47 over the balance of the 2010 season, and then went 13-10 2.95 in 29 starts for the Rays in 2011. He had two complete games and one shutout.

Hellickson pitched his best game May 13 at Tropicana Field, defeating Baltimore 3-0. In a complete game, Hellickson struck out three and walked one, allowing just four hits, only one for extra bases.

Hellickson won the 2011 American League Rookie of the Year award (he led the league in fielding percentage by a pitcher), earning 73 percent of the votes (in the same balloting, Michael Pineda, then of the Mariners, and Dustin Ackley, finished fifth and sixth.

Hellickson has a career record of 20-10, 3.02 ERA.

2012

Hellickson is pitching better this season than he did in his ROY season. In four starts, he is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA covering 25.1 innings. He had his best start April 8, when he threw a three-hitter over 8.2 innings in defeating the Yankees 3-0.

  • LAST VS. MARINERS: Aug. 20 at Tropicana Field, blanked Seattle 8-0; allowed six hits over 8.0 innings, finishing with five strikeouts and one walk; only two hits went for extra bases, doubles by Dustin Ackley and Adam Kennedy.
  • CAREER VS. MARINERS: Hellickson has never lost to the Mariners, going 3-0 in three starts with an 0.81 ERA over 22.1 innings; the Mariners have yet to hit a home run off Hellickson.
  • AT TROPICANA FIELD: Has appeared in 20 games with 18 starts; has a 10-5 record and 2.30 ERA covering 129.1 innings; opponents have hit 14 home runs off him.
