With their 4-2 loss Monday at Texas, the Mariners fell a season-low 11 games behind the Rangers in the AL West race. It has taken only 51 games for Seattle to reach double digits in the deficit department, compared to the 95 games it took the 2011 Mariners to mine such depths. Jason Vargas will be tasked with halting the free fall Tuesday.
Vargas, who lost his last outing at Rangers Ballpark (April 12), is coming off a 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. He will oppose Scott Feldman, whose chance to defeat Seattle last week at Safeco Field evaporated when Alex Liddi hit his first career grand slam. A closer look at Tuesday’s probables:
MARINERS: LHP Jason Vargas (5-4, 3.39 ERA, 1.01 WHIP)
The 29-year-old Vargas, in his seventh major league season and fifth with the Mariners, will make his 12th start and second against the Rangers. Vargas is coming off a 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
A native of Apple Valley, CA., the 6-0, 215-pound Vargas was selected in the second round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Florida Marlins.
He made his debut with Florida July 14, 2005, pitching one inning of relief in a 13-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mariners acquired Vargas as part of a three-team swap Dec. 11, 2008, when the New York Mets sent him along with Mike Carp, Ezequiel Carrera, Endy Chavez, Maikel Cleto and Aaron Heilman to the Mariners. The Mariners sent Sean Green, J.J. Putz and Jeremy Reed to the Mets.
The Mariners also sent Luis Valbuena to the Indians. The Mets sent Joe Smith to the Indians, who sent Franklin Gutierrez to the Mariners.
Vargas, the only lefty in Seattles starting rotation, has a career record of 33-43, 4.41 ERA, including 27-35, 4.09 ERA with the Mariners.

RANGERS: RHP Scott Feldman (0-2, 4.66 ERA, 1.39 (WHIP)
The 29-year-old Feldman, in his eighth major league season, all with the Texas Rangers, will be making his fourth start and second against the Mariners. Feldman lost to the Mariners 5-3 May 23, his last start.
A native of Burlingame, CA., the 29-year-old Feldman was selected by the Texas Rangers in the the 30th round of the 2003 amateur draft. Prior to his selection, Feldman pitched for the College of San Mateo in San Mateo, CA.
Feldman pitched in the Texas system until Aug. 31, 2005, when he made his major league debut in a 9-2 Texas win over the Chicago White Sox. Feldman, who did not factor in the decision, did not allow a hit and struck out two in the only inning he worked.
Feldman served primarily as a reliever in 2006-07, then made 25 starts (28 appearances) in 2008, going 6-8, 5.29. He produced, by far, his best season in 2009 when he won 17 games, against eight losses, recording a 4.08 ERA in 189.2 innings.
Feldman made 22 more starts in 2010, but finished 7-11, 5.48. Since, he has worked mostly in relief. In 2010, he appeared in 11 games and finished 2-1, 3.94.
Feldman has a career record of 33-45, 4.75 ERA.
- 2012: Eight games and three spot starts. He did not go beyond 4.2 innings in any of the starts; has pitched 19.1 innings this season.

- April 24: Catcher Miguel Olivo matched the franchise record when he was charged with three passed balls in a 7-4 win at Detroit. Jerry Narron let three balls get by him Oct. 4, 1980, and Jeff Clement did likewise Aug. 10, 2008 (Clement was catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey).
- April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
- April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.

- May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
- May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
