Failing to see enough improvement in Felix Hernandez’s sore back, Mariners manager Eric Wedge said after Monday’s 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels that Hernandez would not make his scheduled start in Wednesday’s final of the three-game series. Hector Noesi, who threw only 68 pitches Saturday against the White Sox, will go instead.
“He (Felix) threw just okay today (in his regular between starts bullpen session), not to the point where I felt comfortable bringing him back on Wednesday,” Wedge said. “He is feeling better, but there’s no sense in pushing it.”
Hernandez received treatment on his back Saturday and Sunday and threw on flat ground for a few minutes before Monday’s game, hoping he’d be ready to go for Wednesday. Hernandez tweaked his back during the third inning of his last outing Friday against the White Sox. He worked five innings in that game, tossing 85 pitches in a no-decision.
As for Tuesday, Blake Beavan, who last pitched in Seattle’s remarkable 21-8 win over the Texas Rangers, will start for the Mariners against Garrett Richards, just called up from AAA Salt Lake City to fill the roster spot vacated by Jered Weaver (15-day DL). Richards will be making his first start of 2012. A closer look a Tuesday’s starters:
MARINERS: RHP Blake Beavan (3-4, 4.29 ERA, 1.28 WHIP)
The 23-year-old Beavan, in his second major league season and second with the Mariners, will be making his 11th start and second against the Angels. Beavan had a no-decision against Los Angeles May 25, and is coming off a 21-8 victory over the Texas Rangers.
A native of Irving, TX., the 6-7, 240-pound Beavan was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the first round (17th pick) of the 2007 amateur draft.
After pitching in the minor leagues from 2008-11, Beavan made his major league debut July 3 against the San Diego Padres. He worked 7 IP, allowed three hits, two walks and one earned run in a 3-1 Seattle victory at Safeco Field.
Beavan became a Mariner July 9, 2010, when the Rangers traded him, along with Matthew Lawson (minors), Josh Lueke and Justin Smoak to Seattle for Cliff Lee, Mark Lowe and cash.
Beavan, who had 15 starts for the Mariners in 2011, has a career record of 8-10, 4.33 ERA.

The 24-year-old Richards, in his second major league season, both with the Angels, will be making his first start of the 2012 season. Richards pitched one inning of relief in his only other appearance.
The native of Riverside, CA., pitched for the University of Oklahoma before the Angels selected him in the first round (42nd pick) of the 2009 amateur draft. Richards pitched in the Angels system until Aug. 10, 2011, when he made his major league debut against the New York Yankees.
Richards, the Angels starter in that game, allowed six earned runs on five hits over 6.0 innings and took the loss.
Richards began the 2012 season with Salt Lake City of the Pacific Coast League. He made 10 starts, compiling a 5-2 record with a 4.31 ERA.
When starter Jered Weaver went on the 15-day DL, the Angels summoned Richards to take his spot.
Richards almost made the Angels roster coming out of spring training. vying for the number five starter position with the injured Jerome Williams. He was impressive in camp, but club wanted to give Richards a little more seasoning while waiting for Williams to recover from his hamstring injury.
- 2012: Richards made his season debut May 30, when he worked one inning of relief in a 6-5 loss to the New York Yankees. He did not allow a hit or a run while facing three batters (threw 14 pitches); did not record a walk or a strikeout.

AT ANAHEIM (June 4): With the tying runs on second and third in the eighth inning, Tom Wilhelmsen retired Albert Pujols and Mark Trumbo and Seattle beat the Angels 8-6. The Angels had cut the Mariners’ 8-4 lead to two runs as Pujols came up with one out in the eighth. Wedge replaced Shawn Kelley with Wilhelmsen. Pujols tapped a comebacker to the mound and John Hester was caught in a rundown between third and home and was tagged out. Hester kept the rundown going long enough to allow Pujols to reach second. Wilhelmsen then whiffed Trumbo, the cleanup hitter. Wilhelmsen pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career save. Munenori Kawasaki smacked a three-run double and John Jaso had three hits, leading the Mariners. Kyle Seager homered as Seattle had 10 hits. Starter Jason Vargas (7-4) allowed four runs and nine hits in 5.2 innings, and struck out a season-best eight.
