GAME: Padres (21-41, 5th, NL West, – 18.5 GB) at Mariners (27-36, 4th, AL West, – 8.5 GB). GAME #: 64. SERIES: 2nd of 3 games. MEETING: 2nd (Padres lead 1-0). WHEN: Wednesday, 7:10 p.m., Safeco Field. PROBABLE PITCHERS: RHP Jason Marquis (San Diego, 2-5, 7.65) vs. RHP Hector Noesi (Seattle, 2-6, 5.99). STREAKS: Mariners L 1; Padres W 1. TV: ROOT Sports, MLB TV. RADIO: KIRO 710 (Seattle), Mariners Radio Network.

Following Tuesday’s 5-4 loss to the lame San Diego Padres (18.5 GB in NL West) at Safeco Field, Seattle manager Eric Wedge made clear that changes are coming, probably Wednesday, to the Mariners’ clubhouse.

“We’ve got a series of moves that we’re going to be making (Wednesday),” said Wedge.

Although Wedge wasn’t specific about those changes, reliever Stephen Pryor and outfielder Mike Carp could be headed to the disabled list, and starter Blake Beavan and Alex Liddi could be headed to AAA Tacoma.

Those moves would open roster spots for OF Franklin Gutierrez, who has been on a rehab assignment, Casper Wells, Erasmo Ramirez and Steve Delabar, the latter three currently with Tacoma.

The changes would not affect Wednesday’s matchup of Hector Noesi and Jason Marquis. Noesi hasn’t won in more than a month and Marquis, already cashiered by Minnesota this season, is coming off an 8-3 loss. A closer look:

MARINERS: RHP Hector Noesi (2-6, 5.99 ERA, 1.24 WHIP)

Noesi made his major league debut May 18, 2011 for the Yankees against the Baltimore Orioles. The fifth Yankees reliever, he collected the win by working four innings, allowing four hits, no runs and fanning four.

Noesi became a Mariner Jan. 23 when he was traded by the Yankees, along with Jesus Montero, to Seattle for Jose Campos (minors) and Michael Pineda, an All-Star starter.

Noesi, who appeared in 30 games for the Yankees, making two starts, will bring a career record of 4-8, 5.30 ERA into Wednesday’s game.

PADRES: RHP Jason Marquis (2-5, 7.65 ERA, 1.90 WHIP)

Jason Marquis

The 33-year-old Marquis, in his 13th major league season and first with the Padres, will be making his ninth start, second for San Diego and second against the Mariners (began season with Minnesota). Marquis is coming off an 8-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

A native of Staten Island, NY., the 6-1, 220-pound Marquis attended Tottenville High School in Staten Island. The Atlanta Braves selected Marquis in the first round (35th pick) of the 1996 amateur draft.

Marquis pitched in the Braves system until June 6, 2000, when he made his major league debut in a 7-6 Atlanta win over Toronto. Marquis worked one inning, didn’t allow a run and did not factor in the decision.

Marquis pitched for the Braves until Dec. 13, 2003, when they traded him with Ray King and Adam Wainwright to the Cardinals for J.D. Drew and Eli Marrero.

Marquis spent 2004-06 with the Cardinals and then signed as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs. He subsequently spent time with the Rockies (2009), Nationals (2010-11) and Diamondbacks (2011).

Marquis won a career-high 15 games for St. Louis in 2004. He led the National League in losses with 16 in 2006. Marquis made one All-Star team (2009).

Marquis began the 2012 season with Minnesota, but was released May 28. He signed with San Diego May 29.

LAST GAME

Padres 5, Mariners 4

AT SEATTLE (June 13): Clayton Richards threw seven effective innings, Everth Cabrera blasted an RBI triple in a four-run sixth inning and the Padres held on for a 5-4 win. Seattle starter Felix Hernandez (4-5) foundered in his first outing in 11 days. The 2010 Cy Young Award winner worked six innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and three walks. The Mariners made a late run by scoring three times in the ninth. Michael Saunders homered, Chone Figgins doubled and then reliever Huston Street gave up an RBI single to Munenori Kawasaki. Ichiro singled and Kawasaki scored on a wild pitch that struck out Dustin Ackley, to cut the lead to 5-4. But Street induced Jesus Montero to ground out to second base to end the game for his sixth save. For Richard, it marked his first start of the season going seven innings and allowing less than two earned runs.

2012 RECORDS / MILESTONES

  • April 24: Catcher Miguel Olivo matched the franchise record  when he was charged with three passed balls in a 7-4 win at Detroit. Jerry Narron let three balls get by him Oct. 4, 1980, and Jeff Clement did likewise Aug. 10, 2008 (Clement was catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey).
  • April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
  • April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.
  • May 2: Ichiro set a club record for most putouts by a right fielder in a nine-inning game, registering 10 in a 5-4 loss at Tampa.
  • May 3: The Mariners featured a lineup at Tampa Bay that included seven left- handed hitters and two switch-hitters. It marked only the third time in club history that the Mariners used an all left-sided lineup. Others: Aug. 13, 1983 at California and Aug. 9, 1983 at Oakland.
  • May 5: Combined one-hitter by Felix Hernandez and Steve Delabar vs. Minnesota was the 13th in Mariners history. Ten have been thrown by one pitcher, three combined. Most recent combined: Michael Pineda, Jeff Gray and Brandon League vs. Tampa, July 30, 2011. Most recent by one pitcher: Jarrod Washburn, July 6, 2009.
  • May 9: When John Jaso batted leadoff against Detroit, it marked the first time since 1978 that a catcher had hit first for the Marines (Bob Stinson). Oddly, lefty Jaso led off against Tiger lefty Drew Smyly.
  • May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
  • May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
  • May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
  • June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
