As expected, the Mariners, getting ready for the second of a three-game series with the San Diego Padres, made a series of roster moves Wednesday designed to deal with some injury situations and to shake up a club that scored just 10 runs in the first four games of a nine-game home stand. The Mariners:

  • Activated OF Franklin Gutierrez, who was on a rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma. Gutierrez has not appeared in a regular-season game.
  • Recalled RHP Erasmo Ramirez from Tacoma and announced that he would start against the Padres Thursday in place of the injured Kevin Millwood.
  • Recalled OF Casper Wells from Tacoma.
  • Recalled RHP Steve Delabar from Tacoma.
  • Placed OF Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 11, with an inflamed right shoulder.
  • Placed RHP Stephen Pryor on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin.
  • Optioned RHP Blake Beavan, a member of Seattle’s rotation all season, to Tacoma.
  • Optioned INF Alex Liddi to Tacoma

Gutierrez (#21), Wells (#33) and Delabar (#35) will be in uniform for Wednesday night’s game against the Padres (7:10 pm) at Safeco Field.

Gutierrez, 29, has been playing in Tacoma since June 2. In 10 games, he batted .211 (8×38) with five runs scored, three doubles and one RBI. The Mariners placed Gutierrez on the disabled list March 28 with a partial tear of his right pectoral muscle suffered Feb. 28 during a spring training workout.

Ramirez returns to the Mariners after going 3-2 with a 3.11 ERA (13 ER, 37.2 IP) in seven starts with the Rainiers. Five of the 13 runs allowed came in his fourth start May 22 at Iowa. Overall in Tacoma, Ramirez limited opponents to a .260 batting average (38×146) while recording 29 strikeouts and only 7 walks. Ramirez made the Mariners Opening Day roster and had seven bullpen appearances (2.45 ERA) before being optioned to Tacoma May 5 (Shawn Kelley recalled).

Wells appeared in 16 games with Tacoma after being optioned May 24. He is batting .224 (11×49) with nine extra base hits (2B – 7, 3B – 1, HR – 1) and 10 RBIs. With the Mariners he is hitting .213 (10×47) with one home run and six RBIs in 25 games (12 starts in LF).

The Mariners optioned Delabar May 30. In four appearances with the Rainiers he allowed one hit in five shutout innings. He appeared in 25 games with the Mariners this season, going 1-1 with a 5.18 ERA (14 ER, 24.1 IP).

Carp is going back on the disabled list with an inflamed right shoulder. He was on the 15-day DL from March 29-May 1 with a sprained right shoulder suffered during the season opener March 28 in Tokyo. In 32 games with the Mariners, he is batting .157 (13×83) with three doubles, four home runs and 12 RBIs.

The Mariners removed Pryor from Tuesday’s game in the ninth inning after he strained his left groin while fielding his position. In five appearances with the Mariners he has a 1.69 ERA (1 ER, 5.1 IP) with 5 strikeouts. He made his major league debut June 2 at Chicago (AL) and recorded one out in the combined no-hitter June 8 vs. the Dodgers. In 20 combined relief appearance with AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma this season, Pryor had a 0.64 ERA (2 ER, 28.0 IP).

Beavan is 3-6 with a 5.92 ERA (41 ER, 62.1 IP) in 12 starts. He is 0-2 with a 15.43 ERA (12 ER, 7.0 IP) and four home runs allowed over his last two. Since being hit in his right elbow by a line drive on May 7 vs. Detroit, he is 2-3 with a 7.76 ERA (25 ER, 29.0 IP) and seven home runs allowed.

Liddi has appeared in 31 games this season, making starts at third base (17), left field (six) and first base (five). He is batting .231 (24×104) with three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs.

  1. Liddi showed promise. I can see the club moving either him or Seager to SS next season. Or even this season if Ryan’s bat goes completely South.
