WHEN: Sunday, 1:10 p.m., Safeco Field. PROBABLE PITCHERS: LHP Madison Bumgarner (San Francisco, 8-4, 3.08) vs. RHP Felix Hernandez (Seattle, 4-5, 3.70). STREAKS: Mariners W 1; Giants L 1. After his last start, a 5-4 loss to San Diego at Safeco Field in which the Padres slammed him for five earned runs on nine hits, Felix Hernandez said, “This has got to stop. I’ve just got to pitch better.” The Seattle ace, who hasn’t won a game in nearly a month, gets a chance to right himself Sunday in the final of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants.

The Mariners, who finally broke out their bats in a 7-4 win over the Giants Saturday night, will face Madison Bumgarner, who is coming off a 6-3 win over the Houston Astros. Bumgarner has never pitched against the Mariners. A closer look at Sunday’s probables:

MARINERS: RHP Felix Hernandez (4-5, 3.70 ERA, 1.31 WHIP)

Felix Hernandez

The 25-year-old Hernandez, in his eighth major league season, all with the Mariners, will be making his 14th start and first against the Giants. Hernandez, who missed two recent turns while convalescing from an ailing back, is coming off a 5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres.

A native of Valencia, VZ., the 6-3, 230-pound Hernandez was signed as a non-drafted free agent July 4, 2002 by Seattle scout Bob Engle.

He made his major league debut Aug. 4, 2005, absorbing a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, in a game in which Hernandez allowed one earned run and fanned four. Hernandez is a two-time American League All-Star (2009, 2011) and won the AL Cy Young award in 2010, when he went 13-12 with a 2.27 ERA.

Hernandez has worked into the eighth inning in five of his 13 starts and into the seventh in two other starts. But he has struggled in his past three and hasn’t won a game since May 21, nearly a month. Hernandez will bring a career record of 89-72, 3.27 into Sunday’s game.

GIANTS LHP Madison Bumgarner (8-4, 3.08 ERA, 1.11 WHIP)

Madison Bumgarner

The 22-year-old Bumgarner, in his fourth major league season, all with the Giants, will be making the 14th start and first against the Mariners. Bumgarner is coming off a 6-3 win over the Houston Astros.

A native of Hudson, NC., the 6-5, 235-pound Bumgarner attended South Caldwell High School in Hudson. The Giants selected him in the first round (10th pick) of the 2007 amateur draft.

Bumgarner pitched in the San Francisco system until Sept. 8, 2009, when he made his major league debut in a 4-3 San Francisco loss to the San Diego Padres. Bumgarner started and allowed two runs over 5.2 innings but did not factor in the decision. At age 20, he became the second-youngest to start a game for the Giants.

Bumgarner appeared in four games in 2009, then became a fixture in the San Francisco rotation in 2010, when he made 18 starts and posted a 7-6 record with a 3.00 ERA. He was named to Baseball America’s All-Rookie Team.

Bumgarner made 33 starts in 2011 and compiled a 13-13 record and 3.21 ERA over 204.2 innings. Remarkable about the 13-13 record: Bumgarner started the season 0-5. He ended the season with a five-game winning streak and two double-digit strikeout games.

  • 2012: Bumgarner pitched into the seventh inning in seven starts. In six starts, he has allowed one earned run. Bumgarner had 10 strikeouts at Milwaukee May 21, 11 strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs June 1, and a season-high 12 in his last start.
  • LAST START: June 12, defeated the Houston Astros 6-3 at AT&T Park; allowed one earned run in 7.2 innings and fanned a season-high 12 batters.
  • LAST VS. MARINERS: Never faced.
  • CAREER VS. MARINERS: No record.
  • AT SAFECO FIELD: First appearance.
  • LOVES/HATES TO FACE: Miguel Olivo is 3-for-6 (.500 BA), Brendan Ryan is 1-for-3 (.333 BA) and Casper Wells is 0-for-3 (.000 BA).

Mariners 7, Giants 4

AT SEATTLE (June 16): Casper Wells and Jesus Montero greeted Tim Lincecum with long first-inning home runs, Franklin Gutierrez’s infield single in the sixth gave Seattle the lead for good, and the Mariners snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. Hisashi Iwakuma (1-0) pitched two innings for his first major league win and Tom Wilhelmsen collected his fourth save. Lincecum gave up five runs and five hits, struck out six and walked two. The former UW star is 0-6 with a 6.44 ERA in nine starts since his last victory April 28 against San Diego.

2012 RECORDS / MILESTONES

  • April 24: Catcher Miguel Olivo matched the franchise record  when he was charged with three passed balls in a 7-4 win at Detroit. Jerry Narron let three balls get by him Oct. 4, 1980, and Jeff Clement did likewise Aug. 10, 2008 (Clement was catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey).
  • April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
  • April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.
  • May 2: Ichiro set a club record for most putouts by a right fielder in a nine-inning game, registering 10 in a 5-4 loss at Tampa.
  • May 3: The Mariners featured a lineup at Tampa Bay that included seven left- handed hitters and two switch-hitters. It marked only the third time in club history that the Mariners used an all left-sided lineup. Others: Aug. 13, 1983 at California and Aug. 9, 1983 at Oakland.
  • May 5: Combined one-hitter by Felix Hernandez and Steve Delabar vs. Minnesota was the 13th in Mariners history. Ten have been thrown by one pitcher, three combined. Most recent combined: Michael Pineda, Jeff Gray and Brandon League vs. Tampa, July 30, 2011. Most recent by one pitcher: Jarrod Washburn, July 6, 2009.
  • May 9: When John Jaso batted leadoff against Detroit, it marked the first time since 1978 that a catcher had hit first for the Marines (Bob Stinson). Oddly, lefty Jaso led off against Tiger lefty Drew Smyly.
  • May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
  • May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
  • May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
  • June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
