The San Diego Padres continued to befuddle the Mariners Sunday at Petco Park.
Seattle managed five hits as Edinson Volquez (4-7) spun 6.2 innings of shutout baseball in San Diego’s 2-o win. The Mariners capped a 2-4 road trip by wasting a solid performance from Hector Noesi (2-9), who struck out five in seven innings.Noesi ran into trouble in the fourth when the Padres loaded the bases after Chase Headley induced a leadoff walk. Chris Denorfia and John Baker followed with singles. Cameron Maybin lined a screamer back at Noesi, who threw his glove in front of his face at the last moment to catch the first out of the inning.
Light-hitting second basemen Alexi Amarista lined a first-pitch fastball over Casper Wells’ head for an opposite-field, ground-rule double to drive in the only runs.
The Padres erased Seattle’s last scoring threat in the eighth when Amarista caught Kyle Seager wandering too far from second after Justin Smoak lined out to shallow right field. The Mariners advanced a runner to second base twice.
Seattle finished their season series against the National League-worst Padres at 1-5, and ended interleague play at 8-10, their first time in 12 years they haven’t been .500 or better. The Mariners last losing season in interleague play was 1999.
The Mariners return to Safeco Field for a nine-game home stand Monday against the A’s, Red Sox and Orioles.
NOTES — San Diego Padres bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds died Sunday after a 16-month battle with pancreatic cancer. A first-round draft pick (seventh overall) by the Mariners in 1983, Akerfelds spent the last 11 seasons as the Padres bullpen coach. He had undergone treatment beginning last season, and joined the club briefly in 2012. His five-year major league career included stints with the A’s, Rangers, Indians and Phillies. He had a major league record of 9-10 with a 5.08 ERA. . . . Over his last 23 games, Michael Saunders batting .341 (30-for-88) with 14 runs, five home runs and five stolen bases over his last 23 games.

I got to see the Bakers play as a kid and Larry Beck took me to pullman when he was a courgar. Is he still around, maybe at SeaTac?

I think the pitching staff need to bat more. This kind of performance against a team that’s struggling like the Padres is not good.
Can’t say the pitchers didn’t help themselves the last two games.
