The Mariners will reach the halfway point of the 2012 season Sunday when they play the last of a four-game series with the Boston Red Sox. At the halfway mark in 2011, a season that ended 67-95, the Mariners had a 39-42 record and stood 4.0 games behind Texas in the AL West. After 80 games this year, and even with two walk-off wins in their past three contests, the Mariners are 34-46 — 16.5 games behind the Rangers.
However, Seattle’s current winning percentage — .425 — projects to a final record of 69-93, which would be a two-game improvement over 2011. On that optimistic note, the Mariners will hand the ball Sunday to Jason Vargas, who had a career-high 10 strikeouts in his last outing.
Vargas will oppose Felix Doubront, a converted reliever who has appeared in just one game against that Mariners, that two years ago. A closer look:
MARINERS: LHP Jason Vargas (7-7, 4.54 ERA, 1.19 WHIP)
The 29-year-old Vargas, in his seventh major league season and fifth with the Mariners, will make his 18th start and second against the Red Sox. Vargas lost at Fenway Park 6-1 May 14 and is coming off a 3-2 no-decision vs. the Oakland Athletics June 26 at Safeco Field.
A native of Apple Valley, CA., the 6-0, 215-pound Vargas was selected in the second round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Florida Marlins.
He made his debut with Florida July 14, 2005, pitching one inning of relief in a 13-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mariners acquired Vargas as part of a three-team swap Dec. 11, 2008, when the New York Mets sent him along with Mike Carp, Ezequiel Carrera, Endy Chavez, Maikel Cleto and Aaron Heilman to the Mariners. The Mariners sent Sean Green, J.J. Putz and Jeremy Reed to the Mets.
The Mariners also sent Luis Valbuena to the Indians. The Mets sent Joe Smith to the Indians, who sent Franklin Gutierrez to the Mariners.
Vargas, the only lefty in Seattles starting rotation, has a career record of 35-46, 4.53 ERA, including 29-38, 4.26 ERA with the Mariners.

BOSTON: LHP Felix Doubront (8-4, 8.54 ERA, 1.39 WHIP)
The 24-year-old Doubront, in his third major league season, all with the Red Sox, will be making his 16th start and first against the Mariners.
A native of Carabobo, Venezuela, the 6-2, 165-pound Doubront was signed by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 2005. He pitched Bostons system until he made his major league debut June 18, 2010.
Doubront started and collected a 10-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers after allowing three earned runs on six hits over 5.0 innings.
Doubront went 2-2, 4.32 in 12 games in 2010 and split 2011 among the Red Sox and two minor league affiliates, working mainly in relief. In 2011, he appeared in 11 games for the Red Sox, but did not make a start. He entered the 2012 season with just three career starts.
Doubront has become a fixture in the Boston rotation this season.
- 2012: Doubrontpitched into the seventh inning in just one of his 15 starts. But he allowed two or fewer runs in eight starts, including one run three times. He had his best outing May 12 vs. Cleveland, allowing one earned run on three hits in a 4-1 win at Fenway Park. Doubront has twice fanned nine in a game this year, May 22 at Baltimore and June 13 at Miami.

AT SEATTLE (June 30): Booed much of the year for his ineffective play, Chone Figgins came through with an 11th-inning, walk-off sacrifice fly that scored Dustin Ackley from third base and gave the Mariners a 3-2 win that snapped a two-game losing streak. It was the seventh game-winning RBI in Figgins’ career and his first via a sacrifice fly. Shawn Kelley (2-2) pitched the 11th for the win, but the big effort came from closer Tom Wilhelmsen who pitched 2.0 scoreless innings. Manager Eric Wedge called a team meeting prior to the game to address the club’s weak offensive performance in Game 2 of the series, and came away pleased with the effort. “I loved our fight today,” Wedge said. “Playing a good ball club, tight game like that, our starter goes down early and when that happens you know everyone is on deck. Everybody is going to have to fight hard to help us win that ballgame.” Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez left in the third inning with an undisclosed injury after retiring the first eight Red Sox.

- April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).

- May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
- May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
- May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
- June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
- June 18: Aaron Hill of Arizona hit for the cycle in the Diamondbacks’ 7-1 win over the Mariners. Hill singled in the first (Hector Noesi), tripled in the third (Noesi), doubled in the fifth (Noesi) and homered in the seventh (Shawn Kelley).
- June 19: Ichiro reached 2,500 hits (first-inning single) in the fourth-fewest games in major league history during a 12-9 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. His 2,500th hit came in his 1,817th game. Al Simmons had 2,500 hits in 1,784 games, Ty Cobb in 1,790 and George Sisler in 1,808 . . . When Kyle Seager and Brendan Ryan both hit three-run homers in the fifth inning, it marked the first time since July 30, 2003 vs. Detroit that the Mariners had a pair of three-run bombs in the same inning.
