Mariners hitchhike to Boston after manager Eric Wedge says he needs some space after Seattle loses the Toronto series 2-1. Starting pitcher Erik Bedard is released from the DL Friday for what the team hopes is the first of his two non-damaged-goods pre-trade deadline outings. Bedard is pulled after three innings as the salivating Red Sox expecting to extend their lead in the AL East with a few easy wins score nine runs Friday, five more than the Mariners score during the whole road trip. MLB analysts discuss whether the teams continued offensive malaise has anything to do with the fact that Chone Figgins (recently assigned to baggage detail) had left the team bats on the curb at SeaTac. Experts conclude that the absence of bats had no effect.
MLS: British Invasion: Manchester United at Seattle Sounders FC, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Century Link Field (Fox Soccer Channel)
PREDICTION: Sounders settle down in 88th minute. Too late.
Coming off a 4-1 win over the New England Revolution, Man Us Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen say all the right things about how they respect the MLS as a quality league. But their attitude to the contrary cannot be so easily masked. Dissatisfied with losing 2-1, the Sounders defensive line allows in a lazy, late-game howler. Sounders lose 3-1. Rooney and Owen are caught on TV stifling laughter.

Thankfully — at least until next year’s Olympics — sports editors stop contriving headlines from of the words hope and solo. Fast forward to 2111: Women soccer players realize that athleticism, winning tournaments and converting penalty kicks helps promote a sport better than getting naked.

You mean you do not think that Manchester United decided to spend a week in Seattle in late July (typically, unlike this year, when we are in the throes of our six weeks of summer/sun) just for an extreme work-out against such a well-seasoned foe as the Sounders?

Something had to happen, but I sure as heck didn’t see this coming. I’ll miss Ichiro, though: he and Felix were the only really exciting players on the team, the only hall of fame caliber players, and now there’s only Felix. It’s the end of an era, that’s for sure.
