The Tampa Bay Rays, who snapped Seattle’s seven-game home winning streak Monday with a 4-1 victory, have won seven consecutive games and taken over the lead in the American League wild card standings. The Rays will throw a pitcher at Seattle Tuesday night, Matt Moore, who is 4-1, 1.47 with 28 strikeouts since the All-Star break.
The Mariners, who have lost seven of 10, don’t have much — on paper, anyway — with which to counter. Kevin Millwood lasted just 4.0 innings in his last start while giving up seven runs on eight hits, including a pair of home runs.
Millwood has just one win in his past 13 starts, is 0-2 in August with a 9.90 ERA, and has already lost to Tampa Bay once this season.
The Mariners also faced what appeared to be an ugly matchup last Sunday but rose to the occasion by beating Jered Weaver of the Angels, who entered the game with a 15-1 record and 2.13 ERA. A closer look at Tuesday’s probables:
MARINERS: RHP Kevin Millwood (4-10, 4.38 ERA, 1.40 WHIP)
In his 16th major league season and first with the Mariners, Millwood is making his 23rd start and second against the Rays. Millwood had a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay May 3 at Tropicana Field and is coming off a 9-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles Aug. 8 at Camden. Millwood has won just once since May 23, a 4-3 win over Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium July 28. He’s lost his past two.
A native of Gastonia, NC., the 6-4, 230-pound Millwood was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 1993 amateur draft.
Millwood made his major league debut July 14, 1997, winning in relief for the Braves against Philadelphia. During his career, Millwood pitched for the Braves (1997-02), Philadelphia (2003-04), Cleveland (2005), Texas (2006-09), Baltimore (2010) and Colorado (2011) before joining the Mariners.
Millwood twice won 18 games in a season, going 18-7 for the 1999 Braves and 18-8 for the 2002 Braves. Millwood led the National League in starts with 35 in 2000, led the NL in shutouts in 2003 with three, led the American League in ERA in 2005 at 2.86, and the AL in losses in 2010 with 16.
Millwood represented Atlanta in the 1999 All-Star Game.
During his American League career, Millwood made 24 starts against the Mariners, posting an 8-13 record with a 4.91 ERA.
Millwood signed with the Mariners Jan. 24 as a free agent, and earned the fifth spot in the rotation with a strong performance during spring training.
Millwood has a career record of 167-150, 4.12 ERA.

The 22-year-old Moore, in his second major league season, both with Tampa, makes his 23rd start and third against the Mariners. Moore defeated Seattle 3-1 May 1 and lost to them 2-1 July 22. He is coming off a 7-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Aug. 9 at Tropicana Field.
A native of Fort Walton Beach, FL., 6-2, 205-pound Moore was selected by the Rays in the eighth round of the 2007 amateur draft.
He pitched in 99 minor league games in the Tampa system from 2007-10, and made his major league debut Sept. 14 in a 6-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards; pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits; did not factor in the decision.
Moore went 1-0, 2.89 for the season, working 9.1 innings. The win was in his first major league start Sept. 22 when he helped beat the Yankees 15-8; did not allow an earned run in 5.0 innings and had a career-high 11 strikeouts.
He also pitched 3.0 innings of relief against the Boston Red Sox Sept. 17, getting credit for a hold.
Moore has a career record of 7-6, 4.26 covering 114.0 innings.

- April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
- April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.
- May 2: Ichiro set a club record for most putouts by a right fielder in a nine-inning game, registering 10 in a 5-4 loss at Tampa.

- May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
- May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
- May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
- June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
