The Mariners have spent the majority of 2012 languishing in the AL West cellar, but with 12 victories in their last 13 Safeco Field games, including five in a row, they are now only 4.0 games behind the Los Angeles Angels for third place in the division race. The Mariners have surged largely at the expense of AL Central teams, against which the Mariners are 19-12.
The next AL Central club due into Seattle, Cleveland Monday for the first of three games, has been on a second-half skid, has lost five in a row and is 3-7 in its past 10 games.
Kevin Millwood, who rarely receives sufficient run support, will start for Seattle Monday night against Ubaldo Jimenez. Millwood is coming off a no-decision, Jimenez a game in which he got raked for eight earned runs. A closer look:
MARINERS: RHP Kevin Millwood (4-10, 4.28 ERA, 1.39 WHIP)
In his 16th major league season and first with the Mariners, Millwood is making his 24th start and second against the Indians. Millwood took a no-decision in Seattle’s 9-8 loss to the Indians April 17, has won just once since May 23 (one win, six losses, six no-decisions), and is coming off a no-decision against Tampa Bay at Safeco Field Aug. 14.
A native of Gastonia, NC., the 6-4, 230-pound Millwood was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 1993 amateur draft.
Millwood made his major league debut July 14, 1997, winning in relief for the Braves against Philadelphia. During his career, Millwood pitched for the Braves (1997-02), Philadelphia (2003-04), Cleveland (2005), Texas (2006-09), Baltimore (2010) and Colorado (2011) before joining the Mariners.
Millwood twice won 18 games in a season, going 18-7 for the 1999 Braves and 18-8 for the 2002 Braves. Millwood led the National League in starts with 35 in 2000, led the NL in shutouts in 2003 with three, led the American League in ERA in 2005 at 2.86, and the AL in losses in 2010 with 16.
Millwood represented Atlanta in the 1999 All-Star Game.
During his American League career, Millwood made 24 starts against the Mariners, posting an 8-13 record with a 4.91 ERA.
Millwood signed with the Mariners Jan. 24 as a free agent, and earned the fifth spot in the rotation with a strong performance during spring training.
Millwood has a career record of 167-150, 4.11 ERA.

INDIANS: RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (9-12, 5.62 ERA, 1.63 WHIP)
The 28-year-old Jimenez, in his seventh major league season and second with the Indians, will make his 25th start and second against the Mariners. Jimenez defeated Seattle 9-3 May 16 at Progressive Field, but has lost five of his past six decisions. He is coming off a 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels Aug. 14 at Anaheim.
A native of Nagua, Dominican Republic, Jimenez was signed by the Colorado Rockies as an amateur free agent in 2001.
After pitching in the Colorado system for five years, Jimenez made his major league debut Sept. 26, 2006 in an 11-4 Colorado loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jimenez worked one inning of relief, allowing two hits.
Jimenez split the 2007 season between the majors (15 starts) and minors, finally becoming a fixture in Colorados rotation in 2008 when he went 12-12 in 34 starts.
Jimenez won 15 games in 2009 and posted his best year in 2010 when he went 19-8 (2.88) and led the National League in winning percentage at .704. Jimenez made the American League All-Star team in 2010 and finished third in Cy Young voting.
On July 30, the Rockies traded Jimenez to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later, Joseph Gardner (minors), Matt McBride (minors) and Alex White. The Indians sent Drew Pomeranz (Aug. 16, 2011) to the Rockies to complete the trade. After the deal, Jimenez went 4-4, 5.18 ERA for the Tribe in 11 starts.
Jimenez, the American League leader in walks (79), has a career record of 69-61, 4.00.
- 2012: Jimenez has worked into the seventh inning just seven times in his 24 starts and has allowed three or fewer earned runs 10 times. He has walked four or more batters in a game 11 times, the reason he leads the American League in free passes. Jimenez has also surrendered 21 home runs.

- April 24: Catcher Miguel Olivo matched the franchise record when he was charged with three passed balls in a 7-4 win at Detroit. Jerry Narron let three balls get by him Oct. 4, 1980, and Jeff Clement did likewise Aug. 10, 2008 (Clement was catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey).
- April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
- April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.
- May 2: Ichiro set a club record for most putouts by a right fielder in a nine-inning game, registering 10 in a 5-4 loss at Tampa.

- May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
- May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
- May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
- June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
- June 18: Aaron Hill of Arizona hit for the cycle in the Diamondbacks’ 7-1 win over the Mariners. Hill singled in the first (Hector Noesi), tripled in the third (Noesi), doubled in the fifth (Noesi) and homered in the seventh (Shawn Kelley).
- June 19: Ichiro reached 2,500 hits (first-inning single) in the fourth-fewest games in major league history during a 12-9 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. His 2,500th hit came in his 1,817th game. Al Simmons had 2,500 hits in 1,784 games, Ty Cobb in 1,790 and George Sisler in 1,808 . . . When Kyle Seager and Brendan Ryan both hit three-run homers in the fifth inning, it marked the first time since July 30, 2003 vs. Detroit that the Mariners had a pair of three-run bombs in the same inning.
