#128: Mariners Need Bounce Back Against Sox

The Chicago White Sox defeated the Mariners seven times in eight games this season and 18 times in the last 21 between the clubs. To reverse such misfortune, the Mariners will hand the ball Sunday to Kevin Millwood, who doesn’t have a single number stacked in his favor. Millwood is 0-3 with a 4.85 ERA in six career starts at U.S. Cellular Field, 4-10, 4.29 overall in 2012, and 1-6, 4.68 in his last 15 outings.

Millwood, coming off a no-decision in which he allowed three earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings, will oppose RHP Gavin Floyd, whom the Yankees roughed up over 2.1 innings last Monday. A closer look:

MARINERS: RHP Kevin Millwood (4-10, 4.29 ERA, 1.39 WHIP)

In his 16th major league season and first with the Mariners, Millwood is making his 25th start and third against the White Sox. Millwood lost to the White Sox 7-4 April 22 and 4-2 June 3. Millwood has won just once since May 23 (one win, six losses, seven no-decisions), and is coming off a no-decision against the Cleveland Indians at Safeco Field Aug. 20.

A native of Gastonia, NC., the 6-4, 230-pound Millwood was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 1993 amateur draft.

Millwood made his major league debut July 14, 1997, winning in relief for the Braves against Philadelphia. During his career, Millwood pitched for the Braves (1997-02), Philadelphia (2003-04), Cleveland (2005), Texas (2006-09), Baltimore (2010) and Colorado (2011) before joining the Mariners.

Millwood twice won 18 games in a season, going 18-7 for the 1999 Braves and 18-8 for the 2002 Braves. Millwood led the National League in starts with 35 in 2000, led the NL in shutouts in 2003 with three, led the American League in ERA in 2005 at 2.86, and the AL in losses in 2010 with 16.

Millwood represented Atlanta in the 1999 All-Star Game.

During his American League career, Millwood made 24 starts against the Mariners, posting an 8-13 record with a 4.91 ERA.

Millwood signed with the Mariners Jan. 24 as a free agent, and earned the fifth spot in the rotation with a strong performance during spring training.

Millwood has a career record of 167-150, 4.11 ERA.

WHITE SOX: RHP Gavin Floyd (9-9, 4.56 ERA, 1.42 WHIP)

The 29-year-old Floyd, in his ninth major league season, and sixth with the White Sox, will make his 24th start of the 2012 season and second against the Mariners. Floyd has won win and three no-decisions in his past four starts and is coming off a no-decision against the New York Yankees Aug. 20.

A native of Annapolis, MD., the 6-6, 235-pound Floyd was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round (fourth pick) of the 2001 amateur draft.

Floyd pitched in the Philadelphia system until Sept. 3, 2004, when he made his major league debut in an 8-1 win over the Mets. Floyd collected the victory, allowing one earned run on four hits in 7.0 innings.

Floyd went 2-0 in  2004 and went up and down from the majors to the minors through 2006. On Dec. 6, 2006, the Phillies traded Floyd and Gio Gonzalez to the White Sox for former Mariner Freddy Garcia.

Floyd has recorded double figures in wins in each of the past four seasons. He had his best year in 2008, when he won a career-high 17 games (17-8) with a 3.85 ERA in 206.1 innings.

Since joining the White Sox, Floyd has gone 55-55, 4.24. Floyd has a career mark of 62-60, 4.53 ERA.

• April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
• April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.
• May 2: Ichiro set a club record for most putouts by a right fielder in a nine-inning game, registering 10 in a 5-4 loss at Tampa.

• May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
• May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
• May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
• June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
• June 18: Aaron Hill of Arizona hit for the cycle in the Diamondbacks’ 7-1 win over the Mariners. Hill singled in the first (Hector Noesi), tripled in the third (Noesi), doubled in the fifth (Noesi) and homered in the seventh (Shawn Kelley).
• June 19: Ichiro reached 2,500 hits (first-inning single) in the fourth-fewest games in major league history during a 12-9 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. His 2,500th hit came in his 1,817th game. Al Simmons had 2,500 hits in 1,784 games, Ty Cobb in 1,790 and George Sisler in 1,808 . . .
