Although the Mariners lost to the Red Sox 4-3 Tuesday, they are 30-20 since the All-Star break after finishing the first half 15 games below .500 (36-51). Despite the turnaround, RHP Kevin Millwood has yet to join the party. He’s searching for his first win since July 28 after going 0-4, 5.97 in six starts in the month of August.
Millwood will be coming off the worst of those six August outings Wednesday when the Mariners close out their three-game series with the Red Sox. Last Friday, Millwood allowed four earned runs in 4.0 innings, allowing nine hits with four walks and just one strikeout.
“I wasn’t very good from the first pitch,” Millwood said after that game. “Nothing was really working. I wasn’t locating the ball and it showed.”
Aaron Cook, who will oppose Millwood Wednesday, didn’t have anything working in his last start, either. Oakland knocked him around for six runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings in what became a 20-2 Athletics victory.
“I was leaving balls up in the middle of the plate to a real good-hitting team that’s really hot right now. They were hitting it on the barrel — not a good night,” said Cook.

MARINERS: RHP Kevin Millwood (4-12, 4.38 ERA, 1.42 WHIP)
In his 16th major league season and first with the Mariners, Millwood is making his 27th start and first against the Red Sox. Millwood has lost four consecutive decisions, has won just once since May 23 (one win, eight losses, six no decisions), and is coming off a 9-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels Aug. 31 at Safeco Field.
A native of Gastonia, NC., the 6-4, 230-pound Millwood was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 1993 amateur draft.
Millwood made his major league debut July 14, 1997, winning in relief for the Braves against Philadelphia. During his career, Millwood pitched for the Braves (1997-02), Philadelphia (2003-04), Cleveland (2005), Texas (2006-09), Baltimore (2010) and Colorado (2011) before joining the Mariners.
Millwood twice won 18 games in a season, going 18-7 for the 1999 Braves and 18-8 for the 2002 Braves. Millwood led the National League in starts with 35 in 2000, led the NL in shutouts in 2003 with three, led the American League in ERA in 2005 at 2.86, and the AL in losses in 2010 with 16.
Millwood represented Atlanta in the 1999 All-Star Game.
During his American League career, Millwood made 24 starts against the Mariners, posting an 8-13 record with a 4.91 ERA.
Millwood signed with the Mariners Jan. 24 as a free agent, and earned the fifth spot in the rotation with a strong performance during spring training.
Millwood has a career record of 167-152, 4.12 ERA.

RED SOX: RHP Aaron Cook (3-8, 5.35 ERA, 1.35 WHIP)
The 33-year-old Cook, in his 11th major league season and first with the Red Sox, is making his 14th start and second against the Mariners. Cook, who has had half a dozen starts this season at AAA Pawtucket, blanked the Mariners 5-0 at Safeco Field June 29. He has lost his last three starts, including a 20-2 setback at Oakland Aug. 31.
A native of Fort Campbell, KY., the 6-3, 215-pound Cook played prep baseball at Hamilton (OH.) High School. The Colorado Rockies selected him in the second round of the 1997 amateur draft.
Cook pitched in the Colorado system until Aug. 10, 2002, when he made his major league debut in a 15-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Cook allowed one run on two hits in two innings and did not factor in the decision.
Cook went 2-1 in 2002 and pitched for the Rockies through the 2011 season. He had his best year in 2008 when he won 16 games and made the National League All-Star team (pitched three scoreless innings). Cook went 72-68, 4.53 in his 10 years with the Rockies.
Following the 2011 season, the Rockies granted Cook free agency and he signed with the Red Sox Jan. 9 on a minor league deal. Recovering from shoulder and knee injuries that plagued him in 2010 and 2011, Cook began the 2012 season with Pawtucket.
- 2012: He went 3-0 in six stars at Pawtucket, went on the disabled list and was activated June 24 to replace teammate Clay Buchholz, who was scratched from the rotation due to illness. Cook has been a fixture in Boston’s rotation since June 24. He has pitched into the seventh inning four times and allowed three or fewer earned runs six times.

- April 27: Michael Saunders joined Donnie Scott (April 29, 1985) and Jimmy Presley (April 8, 1986) as the only Mariners to hit two home runs in a game in the ninth inning or later (solo homer in the 9th, grand slam in the 10th).
- April 30: When both Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero homered, it marked the first time in franchise history that two players had homered in the same game as a catcher.

- June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). - July 23: Mariners traded Ichiro, face of the franchise for 11 1/2 years, to the Yankees for two prospects and cash considerations. Ichiro made his debut against Seattle with the Yankees at Safeco field and went 1-for-4 with a stolen base.
- Aug. 15: Felix Hernandez threw the 23rd perfect game in major league history, defeating Tampa Bay 1-0 at Safeco Field. Hernandez recorded 12 strikeouts in throwing the third no-hitter in franchise history . . . Mariners became the first team in MLB history to throw a perfect game and have one thrown against them. It was also the first time two have been thrown in the same stadium in one season . . . Of the 22 previous perfect games, six were by 1-0 scores, the last by Roy Halladay May 29, 2010 at Florida. It was also the fourth 1-0 win for the Mariners this season . . .Hernandez became the second Latin American pitcher to do the deed (Nicaragua’s Dennis Martinez for Montreal July 28, 1991, against the Dodgers).
