Lou Gorman, the first general manager of the Seattle Mariners, died Friday in Weston, MA., at Massachusetts General Hospital at the age of 82. Gorman was part of the original management team of the Mariners, who made their debut in 1977.
Gorman participated in the Mariners’ first-ever expansion draft and helped build the franchise for the first three seasons of its existence before leaving in 1980 to become general manager and director of player personnel for the New York Mets.
Gorman was instrumental in helping building the Mets’ National League championship team in 1986.
Gorman had been ill for more than a year before his passing.
After working with the Mets for three years, Gorman joined the Boston Red Sox as executive vice president, a position he held until 1993.
