Hawks get brutal schedule: The NFL schedule came out today and the Seahawks’ is front-loaded with four road games in the first six: @SF, @PIT, vs. ARI, vs. ATL, @NYG, @CLE. Most likely, they’ll be underdogs in five of those first six. So if we could just have the lockout last until the home game against the Bengals on October 30, that would be perfect.

Mariners 13, Detroit 3: The M’s got four first inning runs on just one hit, and they were on their way. Doug Fister was solid through six, and the M’s piled on some runs in the late innings. Nice win. Please don’t think this means the offense is “coming alive” or similar nonsense, but nice win. Here’s John’s story. Mariners 6-12, 4th place, 5.5 GB. Next game today at 12:40 p.m. vs. Detroit. Bedard v. Porcello.

In other news…

Justin Smoak’s father died of lung cancer way too young last night — Keith Smoak was just 54. Justin is on the 3-7 day bereavement list, and the M’s called up slugging OF Carlos Peguero.

Rehabbing closer David Aardsma pitched an inning in Tacoma last night. Didn’t go so well–he allowed two hits including a homer and walked two guys.

I could’ve killed Miguel Olivo last night. Olivo came up in the first after Jack Cust had drawn a bases-loaded walk, and popped out on the first pitch. Mind-bending.

Real Salt Lake plays the first of a home-and-home CONCACAF Champions League final against Monterrey tonight. No MLS team has ever won the Champions League.

Ex-Husky star Brandon Roy was near tears on the Portland bench last night, as Nate McMillan gave him just eight minutes in the Blazers’ loss to Dallas.

My friend David noted a couple of “interesting” things about the Mavs/Blazers series to me over beers at Hawks’ Nest before the M’s game last night: The series features a former Garfield Bulldog (Brandon Roy) against a former Franklin Quaker (Jason Terry). It also features a former Sonics player and coach (Nate McMillan) against a former Sonics broadcaster (Rick Carlisle). I think there was one other but I forget.

Jake Locker did not win the voting for the cover of NCAA Football 12, but he is on the cover of ESPN the Magazine, and along with Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert, on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Aping a trend started by the Seahawks, the Huskies’ scrimmage on Saturday will be held at Memorial Stadium in Seattle Center. Admission is free, but fans will have to check in at the North gate. Scrimmage begins at 11 a.m.

If you want a unique piece of Ken Griffey memorabilia, head to San Bernardino on Saturday for Ken Griffey Jr. Bobble-Arm Night. Griffey played for the San Bernardino Spirit in 1988. True story: I had Griffey’s San Bernardino minor league card, but traded it to my friend’s little brother for three Eric Anthony cards. A shrewd judge of baseball talent I was not. Now I have a full 1988 San Bernardino Spirit set, without the Griffey card.

The third one was that the Blazers vs Mavs is a matchup of the only two owners to vote against the Sonics move to OKC.
