Ichiro had four of Seattle’s 15 hits in Tuesday night’s 13-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Safeco Field. How many times has Ichiro had four or more hits in a game, and how many times did Edgar Martinez get four hits in a game?
Ichiro’s four-hit game against the Tigers marked his first such contest since Sept. 21, 2010, when he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored in a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Center.
Ichiro now has 44 games with four or more hits, including seven games with five hits. Both are Mariner records. During his 18-year career, Edgar Martinez produced 26 four-hit games. Ken Griffey Jr. (1989-99, ’10) had 22 games with four or more hits, including two with five hits.
Among modern-era players with 3,000 or more career hits, Pete Rose produced the most four-plus hit games — 73. Rose achieved that total over 23 seasons and 3,562 games, or 1,956 more games than Ichiro has played.
Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett, whose career was cut short by injuries, had 48 games with four or more hits. He played in 1,783 games. Ichiro now has 44 in 1,606 games.
In Ichiro’s first 10 seasons, he delivered 2,244 hits, most by anyone in the first 10 seasons of a career. Hall of Famer Paul Waner (1926-35) ranks No. 2 at 2,036,
