The Storm continued to get it right, even on the road.
In the first of a four-game road trip Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., Seattle (6-7) never lost the lead against the Mystics to win its fifth game in a row, 79-71. Granted, the Mystics (2-9) are the worst team in the Eastern Conference, but after a rugged start to their WNBA season, the Storm isn’t worried about the quality of the opposition.
After a 72-55 win in Seattle Sunday over Washington, the rematch was nearly as good for the Storm in securing its second road win of the season. Sue Bird had a game-high 25 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field, and Ann Wauters added 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Storm went up 17-10 after the first period and held a 32-26 lead at halftime. The margin grew to 14 points before Washington closed in the fourth quarter, getting the lead down to five. But steady free throw shooting down the stretch clinched the win.
Crystal Langhorne led the Mystics with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Mystics missed 12 of their 16 three-point attempts.
The Storm road trip continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. game in New York.

A win in New York will put the Storm at .500. Would’ve thought they could be break-even by July after that 1-7 start?
Glad to see this five-game winning streak, but these are wins against teams Seattle SHOULD be beating with the exception of Minnesota. New York is definitely winnable, but Connecticut is going to be a real measuring stick. The defense has certainly turned a corner while Bird has been able to carry them at times, but I’m still a little nervous that the Storm are still a guard-oriented team relying on 3-pointers way too often. Gotta have some semblance of a post game when those outside shots aren’t dropping.
Thumbs up, ladies: The Storm ARE playing much better than they were (and could be poised for a playoff run if LJ comes back healthy after the Olympics), but there’s still work to be done. You can’t live and die on 3 pointers and relying so heavily on your point guard. Sometimes you gotta take it inside.
