Five rowers with connections to the University of Washington won medals at the London Olympics Wednesday.
Former UW All-America Megan Kalmoe and current Husky Adrienne Martelli earned a bronze for the USA in women’s quadruple sculls, while Conlin McCabe, Will Crothers and Rob Gibson, representing Canada, took a silver in men’s eight.
In the women’s quadruple sculls, Ukraine won gold and Germany was second. Germany finished in 6:35.93. The USA boat clocked 6:40.63.
Kalmoe, fifth in double sculls in 2008 in Beijing, earned her first Olympic medal, as did Martelli, in her first Games.
In the men’s eight, Germany won in a time of 5:48.75. The Canadians hit the line in 5:51.18. The USA shell, containing former Husky Giuseppe Lanzone, finished a distant fourth.
Newlin, McCabe, Crothers and Gibson are first-time Olympic medalists.
Also at the Olympics Wednesday, fencer and Air Force Capt. Seth Kelsey of Brush Prairie, WA., lost the bronze medal match, 11-10 in extra time, to a South Korean. Kelsey was attempting to win the first American medal in epee in 88 years.
In women’s sport pistol, Sandra Uptagrafft of Spokane finished 28th.
Bremerton swimmer Nathan Adrian, already a silver medalist in the 4×100 freestyle relay, is among the favorites in the 100-meter freestyle final Wednesday afternoon.
