Senior Jeff Tuel came on in relief of sophomore Connor Halliday to throw two touchdowns and 320 yards through the air, but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Cougars as California beat Washington State 31-17 Saturday night in Pullman, the Bears’ ninth consecutive win over WSU.
C.J. Anderson rushed for two touchdowns and 112 yards on 15 carries as the Bears mashed the Cougars wire-to-wire with 319 yards on the ground. Anderson’s 29-yard touchdown run with 10:27 left in the game sealed the deal for the Bears (3-4, 2-2), while the Cougs stayed winless (0-4) in the Pac-12.
Cal quarterback Zach Maynard completed 14 of 23 passes for 189 yards and a TD, but perhaps more impressive were his 78 yards on 10 carries, a TD and no sacks.
Receiver Keenan Allen caught 11 passes for 166 yards, including a 69-yarder that gave Cal a 7-0 lead.
After Halliday threw two interceptions among his first 10 passes (four completions) in the first quarter, Tuel came on to hit 30 of 53 passes, including a pair of scores to Brett Bartolone. Marquess Wilson, the Cougars leading receiver, had four catches for 87 yards but left the game with an apparent concussion.
