Starting guard James Carpenter, the Seahawks’ first-round draft choice in 2011, was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list for the remainder of the season, waived injured wide receiver Braylon Edwards and signed guard Rishaw Johnson from the practice squad to the active roster.

No explanation was given about the illness. Carpenter left Sunday’s game in Chicago with a recurrence of a knee problem. John Moffitt, last year’s starter, replaced him.

Carpenter’s season was cut short for the second consecutive year. Last season, he started Seattle’s first nine games, then went on injured reserve with a knee injury. This year, Carpenter started seven of 12 games, all at left guard after beginning his career at right tackle. In two seasons, Carpenter has started all 16 games he played.

Edwards signed with the Seahawks July 31 and played in 10 games with one start, totaling eight receptions for 74 yards and one touchdown. Edwards had a touchdown catch overturned upon replay review  Sunday in Chicago.

Johnson signed with Seattle April 28 as an undrafted rookie free agent and was signed to its practice squad Sept. 1.

The Seahawks, who defeated the Bears in overtime to retain second place in the NFC West, host the Arizona Cardinals Sunday at 1:25 p.m. at CenturyLink Field.
