Lorenzo Romar rarely allows the public to glimpse his exasperation, but Wednesday in Tucson he had — for him — a remarkable outburst of temper as his Huskies wussed their way to a 70-52 loss to No. 12 Arizona.
“In the second half,” Romar said after he’d calmed down, “we played with a lack of pride.” Asked if he could think of any reason why his Huskies displayed zero intensity in a nationally televised game, Romar said, “No.”
“I felt his frustration,” said forward Desmond Simmons. “I was frustrated. If anybody could have thrown a clipboard, everybody would have thrown a clipboard. It was embarrassing.”
Washington gets an opportunity for redemption Saturday night in Tempe when the Huskies take on unranked Arizona State, which collected its 20th win of the season last Wednesday by blowing past Washington State.
Washington played its statistically oddest game of the year against the Sun Devils Feb. 2 in Seattle. The Huskies entered the contest averaging 68.1 points per game and, after blowing a 15-point lead, came away with a 96-92 win.
That’s the only time this year that Washington has scored 90 or more points. The Huskies have scored 80 or more just four times. Remarkably, the Huskies scored 96 points against ASU despite leading scorer C.J. Wilcox going 2-for-11 and contributing just 10 points.
Since defeating Arizona State in Seattle, Washington is 1-4 with a high scoring output of 72 vs. Oregon State. Since starting conference play 4-0, with three wins on the road, the Huskies are 2-8 and have reduced themselves to NIT bubble team status, which is about as irrelevant as a team can get.
Washington’s 2-8 mark in its past 10 is the worst 10-game stretch for a Romar team since 2003-04.
Washington’s main concern Saturday night will be freshman Jahii Carson, who averages 17.8 points. Carson lit up the Huskies Feb. 2 with 32 points (made 13 of 19 shots), five assists and two steals in 33 minutes. Jonathan Gilling added 22 points.
Guard Carrick Felix averages 14.8 points for the Sun Devils and a team-leading 8.1 rebounds.
Washington is 5-9 against the RPI Top 100, but 2-8 against the RPI Top 50 and 0-5 against AP ranked teams (Arizona State is 70th in RPI). While the Huskies have two quality wins against RPI No. 22 Colorado and No. 45 Saint Louis, they also have four bad losses to RPI 166 Oregon State, RPI 161 Utah, RPI 125 Nevada, and RPI 178 Albany.

SERIES: Dates to Nov. 28, 1977, when the Huskies won 68-62 at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Washington has a six-game winning streak over the Sun Devils, its most recent victory a 96-92 decision Feb. 2. In that game, Washington blew a 15-point lead in the second half, but won by outscoring ASU 7-3 in the final minute. Andrew Andrews scored a career-high 20 points off the bench, Shawn Kemp Jr. tallied 18 and Aziz N’Diaye had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

UW HEAD COACH: Lorenzo Romar (325-213 overall, 232-123 UW) is coming off a year in which the Huskies won the Pac-12 regular-season title. Romar has taken the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament six times and won three Pac-10 Tournament titles (2005, 2010, 2011). Romar, who signed a 10-year contract extension in April 2011, won his his 200th game at Washington Dec. 16, 2011. He had his 300th career victory and his 100th as a conference coach on Jan. 21, 2012. Romar was selected the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.
Romar played for the Huskies under head coach Marv Harshman during the 1979-80 seasons (served as team captain his senior year), and had a five-year NBA career with Golden State (1981-84), Milwaukee (1984) and Detroit (1984-85). He became a college head coach at Pepperdine in 1997, where he coached for three seasons, then spent three years (1999-02) at St. Louis University before taking the Washington job in 2002-03.

Sendek began his college head coaching career at Miami of Ohio, where he worked from 1993-96. He coached at North Carolina State from 1997-06. His teams have made six NCAA Tournament appearances.
