The Sounders, who begin their fifth MLS season Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) at Century Link Field against the Montreal Impact, Friday traded midfielder/forward Cordell Cato to the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2014 supplemental draft.

Cato, 20, played eight league matches last season, becoming the youngest player in club history to record an assist. Overall, he scored one goal with four assists in 15 appearances across all competitions in his one season in Seattle.

He had been training is San Jose with the Earthquakes.

The Sounders signed Cato, who hails from Trinidad and Tobago, Jan. 17, 2012.
