Lorenzo Romar’s Washington Huskies, seeded No. 6, will face Ken Bone’s No. 11-seeded Washington State Cougars in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament Wednesday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. They play the 8:30 p.m. late game on the first day of the four-day event.
Washington lost to UCLA 61-54 Saturday, but the tournament pairings were not completed until after Washington State’s 76-51 romp over Southern California at Beasley Coliseum later. The Cougars completed their Pac-12 schedule with a home sweep of the Los Angeles schools.
Winner of the UW-WSU game will play No. 3 seeded Oregon Thursday in the quarterfinals.
The Huskies (17-14 overall, 9-9) defeated the Cougars (13-18, 3-13) twice during the regular season, winning 68-63 Jan. 5 in Pullman and coming back with a 72-68 victory March 3 at Alaska Airlines Arena. In Washington’s most recent victory over the Cougars, Scott Suggs and C.J. Wilcox each scored 23.
Brock Motum, who scored 31 points against USC Saturday and had 10 rebounds, and Royce Woolridge led the Cougars with 18 points each.
Washington has won five in a row against the Cougars, its last loss an 80-69 setback in 2011.

Washington and Washington State have met twice in the conference tournament. In 2007, the Cougars defeated the Huskies 74-64 in the quarterfinals, and in 2011 Washington knocked off WSU 89-87, also in the quarterfinals.

I’m wondering if this is a make-or-break game for Coach Bone. Past couple years haven’t been very good for the Cougs and don’t seem to be getting better. I think the Dawgs are a dark horse team for the tourey. They’re top 7 players can match any team in the Pac-12 but they’ve been injured this season and have had a lack of focus. If they can find that focus they could make some noise here.
