According to several reports, including one by USA Today, the Seahawks have acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for multiple draft choices, including first- and seventh-round picks in the draft next month. The trade is contingent upon Harvin passing a physical exam. The Seahawks have the 25th overall pick in the draft.
The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Harvin, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract worth $2.76 million, spent the last half of the 2012 season on injured reserve with a sprained ankle. Prior to the injury, Harvin, 24, caught 62 passes for 677 yards and three touchdowns in nine games.
A University of Florida graduate from Chesapeake, VA., Harvin was selected by the Vikings in the first round of the 2009 draft at No. 22, 18 picks behind linebacker Aaron Curry, the Seahawks choice who is no longer with the team. The Seahawks offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell, was coaching in Minnesota for Harvin’s first two seasons. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said when he was at USC, he tried to recruit Harvin.
In 54 games, including 43 starts, he caught 280 passes for 3,302 yards and 20 touchdowns, with a long of 53 yards. He has also rushed for 683 yards and four touchdowns and returned 114 kickoffs for 3,183 yards and five touchdowns.
Harvin has yet to produce a 1,000-yard season or catch more than six touchdown passes in a season.
Against the Seahawks Nov. 4, Harvin caught two passes for 10 yards and rushed four times for 24 yards in Minnesota’s 30-20 loss at CenturyLink Field. He returned one kickoff 39 yards. But his ankle was injured in that game and he was out for the season.
His skills as a kickoff and punt returner could spell the end for Leon Washington, 30, in Seattle.
Just a month ago, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said he wouldn’t entertain any trade offers for Harvin, whom Spielman described as “a dynamic playmaker.”
When news of the trade broke, Seattle receiver Doug Baldwin tweeted, “We’re getting Percy!!! Haha! We getting better by the minute!”
