The Seahawks have agreed to terms with a free agent defensive tackle, Tony McDaniel, from the Miami Dolphins. The news was first reported by Curtis Crabtree at ProFootballTalk.com. Reports say it is a one-year deal the club has yet to announce.
The deal comes after the Dolphins reached an agreement with Vaughn Martin, another defensive lineman the Seahawks were interested in.
McDaniel, 6-foot-7 and 295 pounds, is a career backup with five starts among 79 games played over seven years with the Dolphins and Jaguars. He played collegiately at Tennessee. He is expected to be able to back up at end as well as tackle.
The Seahawks apparently are replacing Alan Branch, who was an effective starter (31 games) and back-up for two seasons but is a free agent and hasn’t struck a deal to return to Seattle. Besides returnees Chris Clemons, Bruce Irvin, Brandon Mebane and Red Bryant, the Seahawks have added Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett in free agency. McDaniel’s salary is probably cap-friendly and he may represent insurance more than becoming a major contributor.

Chuck Knox always said that football games are won in the trenches. Looks like John Schneider and Pete Carroll are following that philosophy. Gotta wonder what other teams are thinking of their moves, especially the 49ers.
