The Mariners Tuesday placed CF Franklin Gutierrez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and recalled OF Carlos Peguero from AAA Tacoma. Peguero will join the club for Tuesday night’s game (5:10 p.m.) against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park and will wear jersey No. 4.

Gutierrez left Monday’s 7-1 victory over the Astros in the fourth inning after diving for a ball in the outfield. He has been plagued by leg problems since spring training and will be making his fifth trip to the disabled list since the 2011 season.

Gutierrez, 30, was batting .259 with three doubles, four home runs (three leadoff) and 10 RBIs in 16 games.

Peguero, 28, batted .246 with 11 runs, three doubles, one triple and two home runs for the Rainiers in 17 games. Peguero played in 63 games for Seattle over the 2011-12 seasons. He hit a combined .191 in that span.

Following Wednesday’s contest, the Mariners and Astros finish their series Thursday with a day game, then the M’s return home Thursday or a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels.

Gutierrez strikes me as someone who did not take care of his body at important junctures in his development. Neither did I, but I was not on a professional athlete trajectory.

  2. Not unexpected, but still bad news. We lose our best defensive outfielder, and one of our best contact hitters, and get another slow-footed strikeout-prone would-be slugger, the one resource the Ms actually have in abundance.
