The Mariners Wednesday afternoon recalled LHP Lucas Luetge from AAA Tacoma and optioned former starter Blake Beavan to the Rainiers. Luetge is available Wednesday  when Seattle closes out a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Safeco Field. Game time is 7:10 p.m.

Luetge, 26, has been with the Rainiers since being optioned to the minors April 10. In eight relief appearances with Tacoma, he posted a 2.45 ERA (3 ER, 11.0 IP) and held opponents to a .184 batting average (7×38). He was on the Mariners Opening Day roster and appeared in four games (0-0, 8.31 ERA) before being sent down.

Beavan, 24, is 0-1 with an 8.27 ERA (19 ER, 20.2 IP) in seven appearances (two starts) with the Mariners this season. In five relief efforts, he had a 8.10 ERA (9 ER, 10.0 IP). The right-hander allowed six hits and three runs in 2.1 innings of relief Tuesday vs. the Orioles.

  1. Beavan is too good a pitcher to get rid of but he’s gone thru this two seasons now. He’s got good stuff, he needs to be more consistent and spot his pitches better.

  2. He might still figure things out and have a big league career but he’s better off doing it in Tacoma. The Rainiers are hot and leading the PCL with a lot of our better prospects looking good. Being involved with that group might help his self confidence.
