The Mariners Saturday placed backup catcher Jesus Sucre on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 6 and recalled INF Carlos Triunfel from AAA Tacoma. Triunfel, shipped to the Rainiers earlier this week, was available for Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees, the third in a four-game series.
Sucre’s unavailability forced manager Eric Wedge Saturday to start rookie Brandon Bantz, 26, in order to to give rest to Kelly Shoppach, who started the past three games, including all of the 16-inning loss Wednesday to Chicago. Shoppach began the season as the backup to Jesus Montero, whose poor hitting and catching induced his demotion to Tacoma, where he started to learn to play first base before undergoing knee surgery. Bantz played 14 games at AA Jackson this season and three at Tacoma before his emergency call-up.
Triunfel is up for his second stint. He appeared in five games. He recorded three hits in eight at-bats in two games with Tacoma prior to his recall. Overall, he hit .303 (54×178) with 31 runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 19 RBIs in 46 games with AAA Tacoma this season.
Triunfel appeared in 10 games with the Mariners in 2012, batting .227 (5×22) with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Sucre, 25, left Seattle’s June 4 game with the White Sox with a left wrist sprain. In eight games this season, Sucre hit .192 (5×26), three RBIs and three three walks. He made his MLB debut May 24 against the Texas Rangers, going 1-for-4 with one run scored.
After the Mariners close out their series with the Yankees Sunday, they host the Houston Astros in a three-game series Monday-Wednesday. Seattle’s next scheduled day off is Thursday.
