The University of Washington announced Wednesday that Lorenzo Romar’s basketball team will return to Madison Square Garden in New York City Nov. 21-22 for the fourth and fifth times in a two-year span. The Huskies join Indiana, Connecticut and Boston College in the championship rounds of the annual 2K Sports Classic, a benefit for the Wounded Warrior Project.
After playing a pair of regional tournament games on the UW campus against opponents yet to be announced, Washington will take on Indiana in the second championship-round game Nov. 21. UConn and Boston College will meet in the first game with the winners playing Nov. 22.
The games will be televised by ESPN2.
Washington is 1-2 all-time against the Hoosiers, a NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed last year that compiled a 29-7 record. This will mark the first meeting between the schools since 1979 and fourth overall. The teams faced each other twice in 1979, Indiana winning both. The Huskies’ lone win in the series came at the Far West Classic in Portland, 81-79 Dec. 29, 1966.
UW went 0-3 at Madison Square Garden during the 2011-12 season. The Huskies lost 79-77 to Marquette in the Jimmy V Classic (Dec. 6, 2011), 86-80 vs. Duke (Dec. 10, 2011) in the CARQUEST Auto Parts Classic and 68-67 (OT) against Minnesota (March 27, 2012) in the semifinals of the NIT.
