After a dizzy spell caused him to be helped off the field Monday afternoon to a hospital for overnight observation, Mariners manager Eric Wedge will stay there Tuesday night as testing continues. Bench coach Robby Thompson will again make the dugout calls for Tuesday’s game, as he did Monday.
“He’s doing well,” general manager Jack Zduriencik told reporters before Tuesday’s game against Cleveland, not long after addressing players. “I had the opportunity to spend some time with him this morning. I visited him and his wife, Kate. He’s in good spirits.
“But it’s a little premature right yet to say exactly what the prognosis is going to be. More than anything else, as a precaution, they just want to keep him another evening.
“He said to tell the team, ‘Keep on playing baseball, and that I’m here watching and pulling for you.’ He’s a tiger. He’s a trooper. And though he’s not here, his heart and soul are here.”
He was reluctant to be taken to the hospital, but Zduriencik said Wedge is under orders to rest.
“He’s resting and I think that’s a good thing,” Zduriencik said. “He’s being smart about this. Eric is Eric. He understands to just wait and see what this is.”
Wedge, 45, is in his 10th season as a major league manager, the first seven in Cleveland the past three in Seattle. He was the American League manager of the year in 2007 when he led the Indians to a 96-66 record. Wedge had 86 at-bats in 39 games as a major league catcher from 1991-94 in Boston and Colorado.
