Mariners manager Eric Wedge will remain hospitalized to undergo tests for the spells of dizziness Monday that kept him out of the first two games of Seattle’s seven-game homestand. Bench coach Robby Thompson will continue as interim manager while doctors try to determine what is causing the symptoms.
Thompson said the pair spoke Wednesday morning about the offensive lineup for the series finale against the Indians.
“He sounded great. He really did,” Thompson insisted. “He really sounded good. He was upbeat and told the guys to keep up the good work. It was more baseball-related than anything.”
The Mariners began the afternoon game seeking to extend their season-best eight-game winning streak and complete their third consecutive sweep. By Thompson’s account, Wedge should find out more about what is prompting the symptoms Wednesday afternoon.
“Obviously we were hoping he’d get out right away,” Thompson said. “Under the circumstances and all the testing he’s been through, it’s taken a little longer. They are just really leaning on the causal side of things. If any of us we’re in a hospital, we’d want out of there, and that’s how he feels.”
During batting practice Monday, Wedge had to be helped off the field and into the dugout after experiencing a dizzy spell. Team doctors examined him, then opted to send him to the hospital as a precaution. He was initially expected to miss one or two games.
