The Seahawks, whose passing attack foundered with three offensive line starters (Russell Okung, Max Unger, Breno Giacomini) missing due to injuries, will play without Giacomini for an unspecified period — it could be a few weeks or perhaps more than a month — after the tackle underwent arthroscopic surgery on a knee. Coach Pete Carroll made the disclosure on 710 ESPN Monday.
Carroll explained surgery amounted to a “cleanup procedure” to remove loose bodies in the knee. He could not offer a timetable for the tackle’s return, although he said he hoped it would be within a matter of weeks.
The Seahawks started seventh-round draft choice Michael Bowie in Giacomini’s place Sunday. The entire line struggled, allowing quarterback Russell Wilson to get sacked five times and hit 11 times. Wilson struggled to a career-worst 49.7 passer rating, but led the Seahawks to a 23-20 overtime victory by taking over the game with his legs.
Giacomini suffered the injury during Seattle’s victory over Jacksonville. Unger, the Pro Bowl center, was also injured in that game (triceps). Okung is on the short-term injured reserve list a sprained toe ligament, and will be out at least six more weeks.
The Seahawks, 4-0 for the first time in franchise history, play another 10 a.m., PT game Sunday, visiting the Indianapolis Colts.
