Loquacious cornerback Richard Sherman, who has intercepted two passes, knocked down four others and did a lock-down job on Anquan Boldin in Week 2, was selected the NFC Defensive Player of the Month Thursday. The Stanford alum, who came to the club as a fifth-round draft choice in 2011, is the first Seattle cornerback to win the award.
The Seahawks allowed 47 points in four games, all victories, while keeping opposing quarterbacks to a 56.5 completion percentage and 60.7 passer rating, the latter the league’s best.
Boldin caught 13 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown as San Francisco opened the season with a 34-28 victory over the Green Bay Packers. But in Week 2, Sherman held the All-Pro wide receiver to one catch for seven yards and no touchdowns.
Last week, Sherman returned a Matt Schaub mistake 58 yards for a touchdown with 2:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, enabling the Seahawks to tie the Houston Texans 20-20 and force overtime. Seattle won 23-20.
For the season, Sherman has eight solo tackles, two picks and six pass breakups. Since 2011, Sherman has recorded 14 interceptions and 47 passes defensed. Both totals lead the NFL.
Sherman was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2.
The Seahawks play the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium at 10 a.m. PT Sunday. Seattle returns to CenturyLink Field Oct. 13 to face the Tennessee Titans.
