Veteran Pro Bowl center Max Unger and DE Red Bryant, both of whom suffered concussions Sunday in the Seahawks’ 27-24 overtime victory over Tampa Bay at CenturyLink Field, have been ruled out of Seattle’s game  against the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome (10 a.m. PT Sunday). Unger’s loss means the Seahawks will again be missing three offensive line starters.

“Those guys will not go,” head coach Pete Carroll said Friday of Unger and Bryant. “We’re going to take care of them this week and have them ready for next week, hopefully.”

Tackles Russell Okung (toe) and Breno Giacomini (knee), both of whom have missed substantial playing time, will also not play. Okung and Giacomini had limited practice time this past week. Carroll said both should be ready for full practice time next week.

“They’ll come back full speed and that will really exciting to get those guys back in,” Carroll said. “They’re dying to play. They’ve had to sit there and watch for so long, that they they really worked up about it.”

Unger will be replaced by Lemuel Jeanpierre, who filled in for Unger earlier this season.

“He’s done really well,” Carroll said of Jeanpierre. “Dating back from whenever he’s played for us in the games, he’s come through. So we really feel that he’s played already for us and we feel like he’s another one of the starters going in there. So we’re pleased to get him his chance again.”

Carroll said he isn’t ready to say when WR Percy Harvin will return, only that Harvin is making progress recovering from hip surgery.

“He’s not ready to play this week,” Carroll said. “He’ll return to practice hopefully next week and we’ll just go one day at a time.”

Third-round draft pick Jordan Hill has also been ruled out Sunday. Carroll said the Seahawks expect DT Hill, suffering from a biceps injury, to resume practice next week.

  1. Death by a thousand small cuts…. The last time the Hawks had everybody on board was for the team photo, I can hardly wait for the on field reunion!

  2. I wonder if the NFL is exploring options for better helmets? With so many active and retired players having concussions and concussion related helmets they have to be exploring their options.
