Having scratched out an 88-78 victory over cross-city rival Seattle University Sunday to open their non-conference season, the Washington Huskies host UC Irvine Thursday night at Alaska Airlines Arena in the first leg of the 19th annual 2K Sports Classic, which benefits the Wounded Warrior Project.
Washington plays Eastern Washington Sunday in the second game of the on-campus portion of the tourney, then heads to New York City for the championship rounds at Madison Square Garden, where the Huskies play Indiana (Nov. 21) and either Boston College or Connecticut (Nov. 22). This is the third consecutive season that Washington will play at MSG.
Washington had to overcome the absences of big men Perris Blackwell (concussion), Desmond Simmons (knee) and Jernard Jarreau (knee). Blackwell is expected to play against the Anteaters, but the Huskies must make significant adjustments to compensate for the loss of Jarreau, who is done for the season after tearing his right ACL, and Simmons, who won’t be back from arthroscopic knee surgery until late December.
UC Irvine, selected by Big West media to win that conference’s championship ahead of UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and Long Beach State, is off to an 0-2 start after falling to University of Pacific 84-79 last Tuesday in Stockton, CA.
The Anteaters are led by Chris McNealy (21.0) and Alex Young (18.5) with Will Davis II pacing the Anteaters in rebounds (9.4).
SERIES: Dates to Dec. 28, 2000, when the Huskies dropped a 56-55 decision to the Anteaters at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. UW senior guard Bryan Brown missed 2 of 3 free throws with two seconds to play and teammate Will Perkins’ rebound follow also missed. Perkins led Washington with 17 points.

- C.J. Wilcox, Washington’s leading scorer last season, began his senior season with a 22-point effort against Seattle U. Wilcox ranks 21st all-time at UW with 1,315 points while ranking second in 3FG made (213) in 100 career games.
- Much-hyped freshman Nigel Williams-Goss scored six points in his UW debut, but was hampered by four personal fouls.
- Freshman Darin Johnson tallied 16 points in his Husky debut and added seven rebounds. His 16 points were the most by a Pac-12 freshman in a debut game.
- Sophomore Andrew Andrews had a career-high 21 points against Seattle U (Nov. 10) while shooting 50 percent from the floor (6-of-12) and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
- Pac-12 announced this week that the Long Beach State game, scheduled for Nov. 30 at Alaska Airlines Arena, will start at 3:30 p.m. and be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
UW HEAD COACH: Lorenzo Romar (331-217 overall, 238-129 UW) is coming off a year in which the Huskies finished 18-16 overall and ended the year with a loss to Brigham Young in the National Invitation Tournament. Romar has taken the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament six times and won three Pac-10 Tournament titles (2005, 2010, 2011).
