The Washington State football team’s 10-year bowl drought is finished.
According to a report Sunday from ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, the Cougars will play the Colorado State Rams (7-6, 5-3 Mountain West Conference) in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl Dec. 21.

The New Mexico Bowl is owned by ESPN and played in Albuquerque at University Stadium, home to the New Mexico Lobos. The bowl is in its eighth season and has begun the bowl schedule the past five years. In 2012, it was one of the most entertaining games of the postseason. Arizona beat Nevada 49-48 behind two touchdown passes in the final 46 seconds from Wildcats QB Matt Scott.
Non-BCS bowl match-ups aren’t announced until the ESPN Bowl Selection Show Sunday at 6 p.m.. However, WSU-CSU appears a certainty.
Per the New Mexico Bowl website and other outlets, the Rams accepted their bowl invitation Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars (6-6, 4-5 Pac-12) won two of their final three games and gave Washington a scare in the Apple Cup before falling 27-17 at Husky Stadium. WSU hasn’t played in a postseason game since beating Texas 28-20 in the 2003 Holiday Bowl.

I was quaking in my Chuck Taylors when I read another site projecting WSU to play Ball State (!) at the Little Caeser’s Pizza Bowl (!!) in Detroit(!!!). I still can’t figure out which of those three things would be worse, but having to go to Detroit any time of the year (let alone in December) is my pick. A trip to Albuquerque to play Colorado State is JUST fine with me…
