The Huskies scheduled a trip to Tulane so that New Orleans native Jernard Jarreau would have a homecoming game. But Jarreau is out for the season with a knee injury. / University of Washington

GAME: Washington (5-4 overall, 0-0 Pac-12) at Tulane (5-5 overall, 0-0 Conference USA). WHEN: Tuesday, 5 p.m., Devlin Fieldhouse. TYPE: Non-conference. MEETING: 1st. RANKINGS: Neither school ranked. COACHES: Lorenzo Romar, Washington; Ed Conroy, Tulane. TV: None. RADIO: KJR 950 AM

Lorenzo Romar scheduled Tuesday night’s game at Tulane specifically so that Jernard Jarreau, his 6-foot-10 redshirt sophomore and a New Orleans native, could play a homecoming game. It’s not going to work out — Jarreau had reconstructive knee in November to repair an ACL tear and will miss the season.

But Jarreau accompanied the Huskies Sunday to The Big Easy, where they will play their first game with the Green Wave and their final non-conference road game Tuesday night before launching Pac-12 play Jan 2. at Arizona State.

Tulane is coming off a 70-65 victory over Jackson State that snapped a five-game losing streak. The Green Wave received a record performance from Texas native Jay Hook, a 6-foot-3 guard. He scored a career-high 31 points and broke the school single-game record by dropping eight 3-pointers.

Washington romped to an 85-66 victory over Idaho State Saturday, the first time this season the Huskies have held an opponent to fewer than 70 points. UW limited the Bengals to 2-for-13 on 3-point shots and held them without a basket for the final 9:51.

The Huskies still have a lot of work to do to shore up their defense in the half-court. They allow too much penetration, evidenced by the fact that the much smaller Bengals collected 36 of their 66 points in the paint.

“I think we are improving and making progress,” Romar said. “I think we’re meshing more as a team. Getting Desmond Simmons (knee) back and it’s really going to help.”

Washington returns to Alaska Airlines Arena Sunday for a 12:30 p.m. date with No. 9 Connecticut (9-0). This will mark the first appearance by traditional power UConn in Seattle, but the match-up will be overshadowed by the Seahawks vs. Cardinals, which begins a half hour after the Huskies vs. Huskies tip off.

SERIES: First meeting. The last time Washington faced Tulane in a major intercollegiate contest was in football. In the 1987 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, LA., the Huskies won 24-12.

  1. Feel bad for Jernard that he can’t play at home. Hopefully he’ll get another chance later in his career.
